I'll try and not confuse you without any pictures or diagrams yet.
I have an existing block garage, hip roof with a falling down wood lean to. It was basically tied right into the fascia and has rotted away, there's also a valley that runs into the back corner or a chimney that is rotting away. I plan on removing the chimney.
--- The Lean To ---
Will be 24' along the block wall, 12' from the block wall out. I plan on using 16' 2x6 for the rafters on 16" centers.
I will be tying the high end into the existing roof above the block wall and re-roofing the entire thing.
(4) 4x6 posts at 8' apart and maybe another one for a 6' sliding door.
2x8 double header tied to the top of the posts.
Do I need a rat wall?
Roof will be either OSB or plywood and asphalt shingles. Either one better?
I want to use steel siding, don't know how to cut it yet.
I need J-channel, 1 corner, and then the drip-edge flashing for the roof to steel conversion.
Don't know how to build the door yet.
Have to figure out how to side up to the header where the track will be.
Want clay/tan/beige siding - with white corners and channel?
Nails vs screws to secure?
2x4s every 2 feet as nailers?
- Is there a book for this sort of thing?
- Would some diagrams help?
I had a builder come out and quote me $7150 to do the entire thing. I laughed. I cant see more than $3500 in materials. I have friends, and beer, and have no real time constraints. If it gets done next spring, it gets done. I would love to have it done before snow, but not for that price.
