Specifically, the White wire goes on the Silver screw, which is the wider of the blades/slots, and the Black goes on the Brass screw, which is the narrower of the blades/slots on the front.
Problem is, if you are interested in doing this anywhere close to the code, there are a lot of things to know. Things such as how far from the box the first romex staple is supposed to be, the fact that sheet metal screws are not allowed for ground screws in a box, and that they must be green, and must have at least two threads of grip in the box, or that the face of the box cannot be recessed inside of the finished wall surface more than (If I recall correctly) .040", or that if using screw terminal type receptacles (as opposed to back wire type) that the screw must be wrapped at least 2/3 of the way around the screw. The details just go on and on, some being common sense, some pretty weird.
There are good books on the subject of handyman/DIY wiring and these should help you alot with code compliance.
