Finally finished laying the blocks today. Putting up the studs in the morning. Started working on the exterior panels while we let the mortar dry. I'm taking off the lap board siding and putting up composite panels. So glad to be done with mortar, it really *****.

took a look at the roof this afternoon. I have metal on top of old shingles. Yay for me. Metal was not sealed at all and I have a little rot. I guess that's my next phase after the exterior is done.

Found a 9' garage door for $50! Putting that in tomorrow along with a walkthrough door.

Pics coming soon...

Busy weekend...

<a href="http://s1225.beta.photobucket.com/user/draggahj/media/Shop/20130303_144256.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee395/draggahj/Shop/20130303_144256.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20130303_144256.jpg"/></a>

Don't judge my wiring, its all temporary!
<a href="http://s1225.beta.photobucket.com/user/draggahj/media/Shop/20130303_164305.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee395/draggahj/Shop/20130303_164305.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20130303_164305.jpg"/></a>

This is the east wall. Took down all the bad sheathing and left it down because its easier to get to my neighbors yard to finish up the outer wall.

Made a lot of progress this weekend. Started removing the tree stumps from around the shop.

trees...

Rent a stump grinder from HD ! It takes a couple of people to load/unload into a pickup, but it is easy for one man to operate. Stop frequently and rake the chips out of the hole. I'll never dig a stump by hand again !!

New(ish) garage door semi up, in uncleaned condition. Fits nice, but need to buy longer side rails. The ones I have are for a much smaller door I guess.

<a href="http://s1225.beta.photobucket.com/user/draggahj/media/Shop/20130307_184108.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee395/draggahj/Shop/20130307_184108.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20130307_184108.jpg"/></a>

So here is the east wall, which was the worst of them all. I have the blocks painted with 2 coats of waterproofer and gettingthe siding up. Its going to rain this afternoon into tomorrow so the fixes get their first test. I still need to dig out more dirt here, but its in my neighbors yard so I don't have a lot of options. Pretty much decided on making a drain and installing gutters. We'll see how well it works.

<a href="http://s1225.beta.photobucket.com/user/draggahj/media/Shop/20130307_184029.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee395/draggahj/Shop/20130307_184029.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20130307_184029.jpg"/></a>

Bought some T5 lights from HD. 8' for $70. Bulbs are $10 each so the whole mess was $110. Worth it , though. These little bulbs are freakin' bright. I have two fixtures installed and the shop is well lit up. Getting 4 more later on so I'll have plenty of light.

Excuse the mess, btw.

Good read, I like what you did with the concrete blocking. I put a layer across my back wall which I completely replaced due to termite damage (then got chemically treated). The outside had a 2' strip of asphalt which was nearly at the sill plate of the wall. I did not want to remove the asphalt so this was good enough. No water since (probably helps I replaced the very bad condition roof too).

Always good to see someone who works hard and doesn't complain about it.

Hagg - I might have missed this. Do you have any connection (bolts) that run from the new bottom plate, through the block and into the existing floor/foundation ?

With only a 4" block, especially when it is 2 high, I would be concerned with a high wind blowing the garage off of the new block you installed. The horizontal joints would make good hinge for a high side load.

I put a 10" piece of rebar in the slab every other block and J-bolts for the sill plate. It seems pretty solid.

A little perspective on how much dirt I have around the shop. This pic is from about floor level looking out the new man-door I installed.

I got all the holes in the wall filled with insulated sheathing today. Rain is coming tonight so we'll see how well we did. More pics tomorrow.

We have almost got all the siding up, just lack half of the west wall. Started putting up insulation and the wood wall on the south bay, moving out of my rented shop this weekend.

Thanks guys. Got the garage door tracks at the local overhead door company for $28. Still need to finish the door install, its sorta temp'd up right now.

FWIW, I'd add some diaganol bracing to the back of track, to keep it moving side to side when it's up. The other thing you might want to do is run some cable through those springs in case they break. Those things can be deadly weapons when they break.

I'm sure you already knew that, you seem to be a smart cookie.

Yea, I have the braces for the tracks, just waiting to get a little more done on the interior. I have the safety cable but wasn't really planning on putting it on. Guess I better do it, though. I didn't think the springs would ever break.

Moved out of the rented shop this weekend. Would have had no problems if we stopped before our last run. Wind picked up to 50mph gustswith a ton of sand/dirt. Made for a miserable last trip. Now the shop is cluttered up until I get things put in their place. Still need to drywall and paint...sigh.

I had this drywall crew some years ago that would hang a 24 x 30 garage. 5/8 DW, glued and screwed, including ceiling, for less than $400. Took em less than 4 hours. You could probably beat that price now, especially in Texas.

Major necro, but I just came across this post and I will be doing something similar to my garage. Any chance you still have the photos of your progress? Looks like whatever image host you used has long since stopped working. Being able to see your process would help a ton.

I have never liked premixed mortar. Buy Portland cement and hydrated lime and mix your own.

The lime makes the mortar very plastic. Sticks like dog sh*t on your 👞
