Adding a door.

Hey DIYers,

I am located in Queens, NYC. My garage is not the largest but our backyard has some space for an expansion. I like to do my own auto repairs and can use another room to store tools like my press and engine hoists and similar items.

Currently I have a concrete garage made out of hollow concrete blocks. I cannot hang anything in the walls so I did this setup and it worked well.

I anchored some wood to the concrete floors and then did some upright wall type beams which were bolts to the roof rafters. It helped to put stuff up and make the shelf.

On the side, you can see the red wood and that is the window that is there at the moment that is currently boarded up. Could I remove the window and the blocks under it and make it a door? The window does not have any blocks on the top, the frame for the roof is there. I know I would have to add header support and jack studs to support that area of the roof.

Here is a mock up drawing I did quickly.

Any ideas on doing this? That red area is the window and where the door would be leading to that extension which would be about a 8'x8' space.

if I'm understanding correctly, you could remove the blocks from the lower portion of the window opening to vreate your doorway. you wouldn't need to add any header or lintel above since it should already be there from the window ( that's providing you aren't widening or heightening the window opening)

I agree, if there's nothing above the window, nothing will be needed above the door.

I have a co-worker who had a Supra, same colour as yours, same paint problem. He sold it more that 20 years ago!

Skill saw with a concrete blade and have at it...

How wide is the window?

It is around 24"-27". I am just trying to be careful about removing the blocks below it. I'll have to look up on how to keep that jam waterproof as outside the garage wall, there is a downslope.

There is just the beam that the rafters anchor to. I can add a header there supported by a king stud and that should be sufficient.

I had this car since 2010. It was parked under a tree and the previous owner left it there where the sap fell on the car and the paint just went with it. They are now heading up in value and people are noticing. All the Japanese 90s nostalgia cars are increasing in value.

Agree if there is nothing above the window now you don't need to add something to it for a door. Windows and doors are generally the same when it comes to framing even with concrete. Just dont go any wider.

I do not plan to make it wider. Just a passageway to head to a storage room setup as mocked up in the picture. Last resort would be a Rubbermaid 7'x7' shed but I would have to leave this garage to walk to it. Just trying to add some ease of access and simplicity to one place from another.

I will take some more pictures to show what I am describing.

Just found these on my phone. You can see the blocks and the slab outside the garage on that wall is not to the bottom block, but higher. It is at the level somewhere at a half way point of the bottom of the window to the garage floor.

I have tried to anchor studs to the bricks in the inside of the garage but they are hollow. How would I anchor the studs to it?
