Adding a DRO to a Mag drill?

Would it be possible to attach a DRO magnetically to my magnetic drill so that I can drill blind holes with some level of accuracy?

Even a spring loaded depth gauge that would allow for at least 10 mm of travel would be sufficient for my needs.

If so, how would it be mounted as I have no experience with those and would I also be able to use it on a drill press?

How would you remove the material on a blind hole?

Which mag drill are you using?

Just put a drill stop collar on the bit, plenty accurate for the application

I don't like to fiddle with those things and risk damaging my drill bits. More of a hassle than it's worth.

I'm thinking of getting myself a plunger dial indicator and 3D print a bracket for it to be mounted on the shaft of the mag drill as its body is completely non-magnetic except for the magnetic base (duh).

Not sure if those can be zeroed out but at least It would be a quick and easy way to see how far the drill has travelled into the material.

Look up drill press digital depth gauge. My quick choice would be a long enough travel indicator on a mighty mag base.

Hello So what level of accuracy? I assume by what you say your looking for a solid reliable stop. A set and forget setup to not have to worry about a woopsie and not break through or to get a correct drill depth?

Looking at the drill what if you just secured a step block or machinist jack to base to stop ram movement for a quick and dirty. Or spend a little time fabbing up a bar to go behind jibs. and secure a block in front of jibs with a fastener. Could get a little fancier by putting another screw into stop block (parrallel to motion) have a quick adjust.
If the operator is reasonably skilled you can do quite well just using a sharpie mark on a clean drill. reapplying as needed.

Nice drill by the way.:)

in the first sentence you say you don't like to fiddle with things because of the hassle. in the second you are going to get a dial indicator and and print a bracket.

seems like designing and fabbing up a plastic bracket is a lot of fiddling around and hassle to make a fragile bracket using a fragile dial indicator for a tool that sees some fairly rough use.

as a side note. i have an evolution mag drill and if i recall it has scale and indicator. not super precise but it does work.

I can't speak for all but a lot of mag drills have a meausrement scale on the side. Pretty easy to just pay attention to how deep you are drilling and if you need to physically limit it just use a collar stop. No sense making it more complicated than it has to be. A magnetic device can get moved, readings can be misread, but a collar stop, if applied properly, will give you a physical limit, which is far more reliable than instruments that can be moved or affected my dynamic elements, especially when placed right next to an electromagnet. Just my .02 $

I didn't pay attention to the measuring scale on the base of the handle that has 1 mm graduations so that's precision enough for my needs and will not be needing a fancy setup as stated above.

That being said, I do also have a drill press that could benefit from a DRO but I haven't required it yet so will cross that bridge when I get to it.

I'm amazed that with such a nice drill there's no stop-rod.

The problem with a dial indicator is its a fragile thing, get a 2" or 3" and its a super fragile thing. Not sure even what they cost now? Maybe there are cheapies but a name that you recognize is going to be $300+ for a 3" indicator.

There are cheapie sliding scale DROs on ebay as I recall, but then its about mounting the saddle somehow and getting it aligned with the sliding way of the tool, and/or engineering the brackets with the right number of degrees of freedom so it can slightly self-align. Usually sheetmetal works well as it can be fairly rigid one direction and then springy in the other.

I like the idea of cutting a simple stop block with a mitersaw out of wood. Should be able to do that to 1/32" or 1mm precision without a lot of work.

What's the app (need) for precision hole depth?
