Adding a table to posts

Is it possible to add a table to a post? I spent a couple of hours writing out html tables and then inserted the code between html tags as shown on the help page but, that didn't work. Just spat out the the html code so it was a total waste of time. Tried copying in the html table formatted which also doesn't work. Tried pasting from Excel and that didn't work.

Pretty much ran out of ideas and I've not seen any post with a table embedded in it so maybe it can't be done.

Any help would be appreciated.
