I am thinking of taking my tool cabinet and adding sides and a top for storage on top of the existing box it would only be about 6" tall like just like in service cart but with having all draws instead of a open bottom. I would like to hear or see pictures if anyone has done this.

Your post is difficult to understand. How about a pic of your cabinet and an explanation of what you are planning for it.

It sounds like you want to add 6" of drawers to the top of a roller cabinet. You can buy an intermediate cabinet to do this.

I was thinking of adding an intermediate box but i am not any luck to go the whole length of the bottom box front to back only ones that matches the length of the top box front to back. here is a picture of the box i have from home depot.

Adding a top for storage top idea came a service cart top like the one in the picture from harbor freight

.

I don't want to buy another cart since i already own the bottom box above home depot.

So basically you want to add a "box" with an opening lid to the top of your rolling tool box ?

* when I say "box", I mean box like a cardboard box (as a reference) not a tool box ?

I'm not 100% sure what you're looking to do but I have a cart like that (linked) and a rolling tool box. I use the top of the tool box as a bench, naturally. The top of the cart can also be used as a bench and it's SO easy to let things gather on top. It's the pits when I need something inside the lid, everything has to be cleared off. So, I don't see the advantage to a lid.

There are a bunch of top chests that would go on top of your existing box, all with lid tops:

It looks like the shortest one is only 3-drawers + top lid

Like b-dog said having a lid is a pain. Once something gets set on it you can't open it. I have a roll-a-round work center with a sliding top. I can't keep anything in there I might use because 99.9% of the time I am working on it. There is a 9" Ford rear-end sitting on it right now. No way to open it...

Try this if you only want a few drawers:

If you want the flip top, try this:

Both are only 1" shallower than your current box, but would look just fine sitting on top of it. It would not be too difficult to paint the gray drawer fronts to match your current box if you were really worried about them matching. All of my tool chests are Performax brand - they are the same (if not better) quality than Husky.

I seen people buy 2 $99 HF cart and double stack the drawer sections. What I think your thinking of is taking the $99 HF cart and putting it on top of your existing toolbox and fold out shelves?

I took one of the $99 HF carts and cut the lower section part of the legs off.
The top section now sits on one of my large work benches and is great to use.

The lower section pieces I cut off right at the top of the perimeter walls, added the casters, etc and use it to move several stacked large 31 gallon rubbermaid storage bins around the work shop. Great for keeping automotive assemblies safe but out of the way and portable.
