1320, sorry, didn't mean to step on toes here, i don't have a degree in construction, my dad started me out when i was a pup, 30+ years ago and have been doing it since then. i was only commenting on what i saw in your pics, and your statement, "The trike is, a few other things", but i gotta tell ya, in all the time i've been doing this, i've yet to have to go back and fix a crack, a copula popped nails that weren't drove all the way in, ya, but no cracks. go figure, i guess i've just been lucky. anyway, like i said, i didnt mean to step on anyones toes and good luck with your ceiling, little d.

I'm not concerned about the ceiling, I was just showing an example of what I did, which sounds a lot like what the OP wanted to do. The truss wasn't designed for what I did to it, and the crack is the consequence of it. If the crack doesn't bother the OP, and he's basically putting up there what I have, he should be fine. If he doesn't like the potential crack, he should try something else. I'm hoping one day to add a 3rd car garage bay, which will be stick built and the ceiling joists will be running across the 12' wide garage and will likely be 2x10 or 2x12 with 3/4" plywood decking and all that **** will get moved over off that ceiling to a proper support, plus at 30'x12', a lot more room. The attic ladder will stay in the original attic, it's one bay from the current exterior wall, so it'll save floor space.

BTW, I didn't build the house, only the addition, I wouldn't have gone trusses, I would have stick built the roof and used TJI's in the garage and ran them the 20' width instead of the 24' way.
