I've got an R panel skinned pole barn building with no roof over hang. We are adding a wrap around porch on two sides and would like to add a covered portion. Currently thinking 6-8ft covered. Similar to what is in the picture below. Because we have gutters on the roof pitch side we planned to tie it in under the gutter. That is also the side where the deck is also only a walk way (windows only, so not planning any seats or stuff there, just covered walk from the driveway).

I'm guessing that we could not weld up brackets to hold R-panel at a 1/12 or 2/12 pitch, 6' out. So we will need posts at the far edge of the roof. Since this will only support R Panel, spanning at most 8ft from the building. Can I get away with all 2x4 construction, with 1x3 or 1x4 perlins? What spacing can I get away with on the 2x4 rafters? How about the nailer/main beam - can that be 2x4?

Or, could I use metal for the main beam so my posts can be further apart? The long edge is 36', which faces the future larger deck and the door, so if I could get away with metal main beam and 12' spacing, that would be awesome.

Happy to throw some sketch up drawings or photos of the building up if needed.
