Adding fencing or rails to trailer

Some of you know from a previous thread that my grandfathers health has caught up with him, he recently had his left leg amputated. He can no longer drive his four wheeler that he took hunting and ice fishing so he gave it to me, I can't thank him enough for it. Along with it he gave me the trailer as well. I'm unsure of the make and model and it's too late to go get specifics.
Anyway to get to the point I would like to add fencing/ sides to the trailer. It already has a small 2 or so inch lip on the sides and front that I believe are aluminum. The flooring is ply wood and the back comes down as a ramp to allow easy loading. I've never welded but my neighbor was a boiler maker and has all the necessary tools and equipment and is willing to teach me. Is welding the best route? I was thinking of bolting it on but I think that would be too flimsy. If that would work I would prefer to go that route. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Tomorrow I can get the trailer specifics and dimensions. Thanks in advance everyone

Is the trailer to haul the quad or tow behind it?
Sounds like haul it or both. You may be able to bolt wood right to the trailer. What is the purpose of the sides or rails?

It's used to haul the wheeler on, but when needed it gets hooked up to the ball on the wheeler like for ice fishing trips as example. I'd like to add the rails because I also do some scrapping and would just feel more comfortable putting stuff on the trailer with a foot high rail. Plus the wheeler bounces around quite a bit on the old windy roads that lead to hunting camp

Just a few details the trailer is a 6 foot triton GU8, the already existing lip is 2 inches. I went to their website and found side rail kits but no pricing. I'm gonna stop by during lunch tomorrow and check price and availability then weigh the cost of buying the kit and cost of materials and time spent if I do it myself. Again any advice is welcomed and appreciated

A photo or reference would be useful here to help visualize what the base trailer is, and what options are available to fabricate rails.

Do the best of both worlds for trailer utility purpose...weld on stake pockets around perimeter and make drop in sides...that way if you want a flat open trailer it's as fast as removing the "walls" up and out of the stake pockets. That's all I do with my 8x20 open trailer so it's multi faceted.
