Adding gas range

I just bought a gas range to replace my broken electric one so now I need to tap into a gas line to fuel it, there is a 15ft 1/2'' gas line that comes off the main line and feeds my gas dryer.

My question is do I need to run a bigger line to support both appliances or can I get away with tapping into the existing line, the stove has a max btu of 60k btu's with everything wide open and I don't know what the dryer uses. The chances of them both running at the same time is small and even less that i'd be using every burner to.

I was taught to calculate the total load that is fed for each section, & size that section accordingly. And each section that feeds multiple branch sections. Length of pipe comes into play. The dryer might need only 1/2" & the range might barely work on 1/2", but combined they should be on a larger size since it is possible for them to both be run at once. This link has a pretty good explanation of how to figure it out. Start by looking at "Figure A", to get an idea of how it works, draw up your own layout, then go to the tables to work out your own situation.

Typically I run 3/4 pipe to a range, even if the current range doesn't require it. But it's the line that feeds that tie in point that may need to be resized depending on length or other loads. And frequently it is easier to tie in closer to the meter & run a longer distance than to increase the size of an existing section.

I'd say you'd be safe by increasing to 3/4" for the feeder supply line until it gets near the gas stove ; then, you could decrease to 1/2" and T to the dryer. Dryer will be fine with the 1/2" line after the 3/4" that feeds the gas stove.

Thanks for the link, I tried finding something like that but kept striking out.

My plan going off the chart specs is to run the 3/4'' line from the main pipe till i'm under where the stove is, I get the stove today so if its only a 1/2'' ****** i'll reuse some old pipe for the couple feet it needs to go and then run the rest as 1/2'' to the dryer as its always been.

You're probably well aware of this, but you're going to use an appliance connector between your 1/2" black steel pipe going to the stove and the stove connection. Buy a brand new one...do not reuse an old one as they get old, brittle and prone to cracking over time. Also, if it was me, I would install a 1/2 quarter turn shutoff valve between each appliance and the gas line serving it, so you can shutoff only that appliance if needed.

The newer flexible connector will NOT work with the older flexible connector adapter. Make sure you new flex connect comes with adapter for both ends.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I got the stove home and it has a 3/4'' pipe fitting so from the 1'' main line i'm going to run 3/4 right to the stove and tee off with 1/2 going to the dryer.

I'm going to try to reuse as much of the 1/2 pipe going to the dryer but everything else will be brand new and where I tap in there will be a shut off valve to block off that side of all the piping.

While you're tearing into things, have you considered adding a "pot filler" cold water line up near the stove ??

I've always wanted pot filler and put it on my bucket list when I upgrade my kitchen. Good luck.

I hope its a nice stove, the wife really liked it and the local appliance store beat everyone else hands down so we pulled the trigger, it will be my first ever gas stove so will need to learn to cook on it.

I agree that those pot fillers would be nice but way over kill for this house, the stove also is but we didn't buy it to fit this house but more for the next one so I hope it lasts.
