I searched around and don't see anyone offering this type of service for sockets specifically, and I assume sending them off to a laser engraver would be hugely expensive as they are all different sizes and would require different text/designs. So, I'm wondering if it is something I could do at home. Anyone know much about laser etching in general to give an idea of what type of equipment would be needed? I assume to cheapie laser etching machines on eBay won't quite cut it on a rounded surface.

you would probably need to rechrome them after... be a lobg tedious process of doing it and changing them out. be cheaper and easier to buy new.

There's a laser at my work which will cut wood and acrylic. It cost around uk£13,000. As far as I know it's a CO2 laser and they won't engrave metals except for anodised aluminium. It will work on iPods, phones, that sort of thing.
I guess you need a more expensive type designed for metals.

Buy new ones it will be cheaper. Whom ever came out with the idea of printing sizes on the sockets is the most dumbest ********** ever born. Sockets get greasy oil and ATF all have acid and detergent in them and will fade away in time. Then it might be cheaper rather then stamping as well all know its not about the consumer anymore its about profits and shareholders. Tool companies don't take pride in their craftsmanship or quality anymore.
