pretty excited, triumph C7000 lift on order :) Has anyone added an overhead trip wire to either stop the lift or sound an alarm when a car is near the ceiling?

thanks!

You can add a normally closed switch contact that inhibits the relay/contactor coil for "UP" (motor-run).

Many of the things don't use a contactor to save money. Which leads you into the conundrum of adding one or trying to find a switch rated with contacts rated for the FLA (full load amperage) of the motor.

I would try to find an IEC contactor on ebay (or new) and flow from there.

The two post lifts with a cross bar on top have a pretty simple switch.
Mine (Rotary) has a momentary switch with a piece of conduit sitting on top of it. the conduit is simply resting on a pin on one end and sitting on the switch on the other. If the car lifts the conduit, the switch opens and the motor stops.

wow, this is an awesome forum, thanks for the response. The triumph lift is two free standing posts that don't go all the way up (like the maxjax). Adding a bar will turn into quite a bit of effort - bar would need to have minimal bow in the middle and protected as to not scratch the paint. I'm going to see whats out there for optical sensors, if not i might have to fab something :)

Looked around a bit this morning, think I'm going to make an ultrasonic proximity sensor using an Arduino & place one above the car and another in the hood area. I couldn't find any simple off the shelf solutions.

garage door safety beam setup maybe ?

otherwise hang a conduit length from the ceiling and slip a foam insulation pad over it to protect the paint and add a switch and your good to go .

My lift is powered by 230vac 1ph. I would assume most home units are.

Excellent diagrams, Bob!

The 3 phase bottom diagram shows how a contactor can be included. It would need to be a version with a 240vac coil. Just erase/eliminate the L2-T2 track from the diagram and the same thing will work with single phase. The "ON" should be a momentary normally open pushbutton switch. The symbology suggests a limit switch.
