We are in the process of buying this house. We are going to replace the big window with a door.

What's my best option for a porch roof over the door?

I would bring the roof off the existing roof above the current window, you will most likely have to go up a ways to get the minimum pitch for your area. You'll also have to tie into the two two roof pitches coming down. It's not that hard to do if you are doing it yourself.

Just a flat roof straight out, or an A frame roof?

This is the side. The front door is to the right and around the house.

And yeah, a taller garage door is on the list...one day.

This is the front door. Probably won't do much to it.

With the existing roof lines, I would have to build a gable roof over that new entry. Make it the same pitch as the existing roofs and it will look like its been there forever.

Extend it out past the eaves a bit (3') and build a small landing/porch.

+1 I don't see how to do it well without a gable.

That's a strange front door location, is there a sidewalk leading around to the front door that I'm not seeing?:headscrat

the picture of the front door was taken from the road. But, there is no walkway to which is pretty standard in our area. There is a back door, but it is in the garage.

When I do the gable roof, could I use metal? Sort of like an accent? How do I blend metal to the shingles?

Easier to do shingles to be honest. IF you asking these questions you need to get someone experienced in this to help this cause.

You could. Standing seam metal would look fantastic, but is super expensive (though not necessarily all that awful for just a gable).

The interface between a gable and shingle roof would be a W flashing.

I suggest the gable roof that is pieced in. It would like it fit more than a shed roof. Are you doing a deck, or just a small covered entrance?

That is what I was talking about in my earlier post, it definitely looks like it belongs. Looks good, but you really should invest in a "good" level!:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti Just a tease about your photoshoped image...

Just watch how wide you make it so the valleys all line up with the right rain gutters and don't fight one another.

^ ^ ^ This for both the big window converted to door . . . AND . . .
. . . . . . . . that "front door" thing that is around the house.

I'd make that converted big window into nice entry door with glass panels on both sides with 36" wide door in center. Put nice storm door with some screen capability to let breeze through. Also could make the side panel glass have crank out capability to allow cross breeze as well.
