I have a few old 1/2" drills. One I would like to use has no Reverse. Has anyone added R switch to an old drill?

I doubt the windings are capable of reversing
You are right. But I can cut wires and reroute the current flow direction between field and armature. What I am not sure is the fitment of newer switches with R.

No, I have not converted a F only drill to F-R.

This is from an electrical engineer (not me).
-------Field coil ------- Brush 1 -----Brush 2----- (circuit 1)
-------Field coil ------- Brush 2 ----- Brush 1 ----- (circuit 2)

If you flip brush contacts, the drill will run in the opposite direction. Have you seen an older drill with F-R switch moving about two inches over a 90 degree arc? That movement does exactly this. See attached photo. Black Decker 6051. I am keeping this drill because of this unique feature.

ok. interesting .
keep in mind the chucks on reversible drills have a lh thread screw into the shaft to keep them from spinning off in reverse too.
Thank you. I have not thought about it. I will use reverse sparingly just to get wood augers out of binding.
