Adding shed gable vents

I built a shed end of last year and did not install the gable vents. I have the vents now and will be installing them. I would like to center them at the top of the gable ends, but there is a 2x4 from the roof truss that is centered. Can I just cut out this 2x4, and then add 2 additional 2x4s on each side of my vent? I tried to illustrate it in red on the attached pic.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Put in the new 2x4s before cutting the old to play it safe, but with that small of a span you should be fine.

Thanks! Good point, I'll install the additional supports before cutting the center one.

Most gable vents are external mount and the louvers stick back into the attic a few inches. To leave the existing gable truss center 2x4 support you would have to make a window box structure on the outside of the home that sticks out a few inches.

Might not be an issue.. but then again, might be an eyesore too.

Leave the stud. If you have to , notch it out a bit for the inside clearance needed.

That vertical 2x4 is likely not just there for structural support for the roof rafters, but is also serving a second purpose.

Take a look on the outside of the shed and you'll likely see that gable end wall has a seam running right down the middle (vertically).

If so, that 2x4 is also what the edges of those two separate pieces of plywood are fastened to. I'm not saying you can't cut that 2x4, just pointing out that it may be serving two purposes.

Ah yes, you are correct. I will just notch the 2x4 where the vent will go, and add additional nails if necessary in the siding.
