adding switch to an outlet

Hi folks. Ive taken power from one outlet and added another in my storage loft for my small compressor.
However, I got to thinking that a switch might be nice so I could put power to the lift outlet only when needed.
Could someone describe how to add the switch in line?

It would be helpful to get a better description of how you have the wiring and receptacles installed. You mentioned adding a receptacle for a compressor, but then said you want to add a switch for your lift.

Is the lift receptacle at the end of the line, or is the compressor at the end of the line?

You can buy combination devices that have one receptacle and one switch in the same package as a standard receptacle. You can then wire it so that the switch either: (1) controls the combination receptacle, or (2) controls any additional receptacles you add down the line.

What kind of lift is this?

Does it run on 240v?

If so just get an A/C pullout disconnect.

It 's a compressor in the loft. I assume he doesn't want it to recharge all the time and it's hard to get to, hence the switch.

OP, you can install a new separate box or install a 1/2 receptacle, 1/2 switch at the box you took power from.

Even an old x10 unit.
Sticky back switch mounts anywhere and as many as you want.
The only wiring is changing the receptacle.

Available at Christmas time, they have plug in units that require no wiring and are 2 for 8 bucks.

I think it's a typo. The sentence, "I got to thinking that a switch might be nice so I could put power to the lift outlet only when needed" should read "loft" to make any sense.

BTW @ the OP, I'm sure many are thinking this so I'll say it, you sure about doing your own wiring?
