Adding Variable Speed?

First time user, so please excuse if this isn't the right place to post. I'm shopping for an 8" bench grinder, and had settled on a shop fox variable speed. Just found two used made in USA 1HP Craftsmans though for slightly less, and with stands + extra wheels. So here's my Q. Can I slow the speed of the 1HP grinder using my 1HP router switch? Can't believe it's this easy, but thought I would ask.

No it will probably work for a while but will burn up the motor it has to be a universal motor o like a router has. I don't know of any way of slowing down a single phase motor like that I believe they call that an induction motor that the Grinders have. Now if you could find a 3-phase grinder you can get a variable frequency drive and that's a slick set up but it would need to be at 3-phase grinder.

Buy yourself a really good three phase industrial grinder.
Connect to a VFD and it will last a lifetime.
Skip all the little toys

Like the others have said, find a three phase grinder. Whenever I'm back in Ohio I always check Craigslist and it seems there is always a lot of used three phase industrial equipment.

While you're at it, skip the standard grinder and get a belt grinder. I would suggest a 2x42 as a good all around size, and don't recommend 1-inch belts fir anything but detail sanding, deburring, or knife sharpening.

I've said it many times, but I'll say it again: once you try belt grinders you'll never want an old fashioned wheel type.

Delta sells an 8" variable speed grinder. They're only rated for 5A at 120v, so they're around 1/2 horsepower - certainly not as heavy duty as an older USA Made craftsman or anything, but they get the job done. They sell for around or a bit under $200. A little pricey for what they are.

Is there a specific need you have for a 1HP grinder? There are 1/2 HP 5amp variable speed 8" grinders and maybe a 1HP offered by the same manufacture.

That last Jet grinder with variable speed is basically a 3-phase grinder with internal VFD to run on single phase. You could buy a great USA 3-phase grinder (used) & separate VFD for less $$

For example, I bought my Baldor 2x60 belt grinder for $35 because it was 3-phase and nobody wanted it. $100 more for a VFD and I was all set.

I am curious sometimes,,, what is it you r trying to do?

When I was a kid we used a bench grinder and wire wheel. I have a big Baldor, sits in storage, someone got me a deal but I never set it up. I have a little 1/2 with a stone and a wire wheel. I cant even remember the last time I use the stone and the only time I use the wire is cleading the occasional bolt. Bolts are hard to do with handheld. I touch up most drill bits with the DD and can even do them on hand grinder and air power handheld is so versatile with wire wheel as well as variable. We made do when I was a speout but I now have the stuff and have become so acustom to do it other ways, so easy and fast.
I use electric on 1/4x4 1/2 and have a couple right angle air pictures for wire and cut off.
