Adding vent to finished basement room

Doing some renos on my house.. the HVAC people came to install a new compressor and to add a feeder vent (which would piggyback off of an upstairs bedroom duct). The builder then told me I wouldn't need a return vent in the basement room. Is he right? How he explained it seemed contrived.. but I nodded and said ok.. looking for some second opinions.

I dont think you will have sufficent heat in that room without another zone...just my .02.

The vent is already going to be taxed to get near enough air for the space. Not having a return will only make it worse.

We're talking a 3 story house here? Basement, main level, upstairs where this bedroom is? What's your current setup? A single unit? Any zoning, or just constant everywhere?

What's on the other side of the new room's door? Can you just undercut the door and have that act as the return?

Having the builder run a return vent.. maybe only 8" duct.. the basement room had previous moisture issues, so I want to make sure air is properly circulated.

Depending on the size of the room and vent, 8" should be fine.
