Addition egress...code?

My detached garage plan has evolved into an L-shaped addition to my house. It would be connected at the rear door of my existing tiny garage. That door into the (approx) 12x15 addition would have a hallway, with a bathroom straight ahead and the (approx) 17x34 garage to the right. The garage will have a full 2 story ceiling, but I want 8' ceiling in the hallway and bathroom to allow for a second story office with an interior fixed window overlooking the garage. However, I don't want to lose garage floor space with a set of stairs, so I am wondering if having the roof overhanging an exterior stair set up to the second floor would be allowable by code. Interior stairs aren't required, are they?

Also, would I be required to have an exterior door from the addition to the backyard? I would like to have the only entrances into the addition being the door from the existing garage, and the 12'x12' bay door. The exception would be the exterior stair set and door into the second story office. I wonder if that would be allowable by code?

Because of my focus on security, I want to limit the number of entrances into the addition. There will be no exterior windows, except for in the bathroom for ventilation. Anyone see any problems with these ideas?

You need to speak to your local authorities to find out what the local codes demand. Not a lot of point in asking on here as we don't even know what country you're in let alone your locality - maybe add your location to your profile?

Draw up some semi-rough sketches and run over to your Building and Safety dept. If they're friendly enough, they'll let you know what you can and can not do - also tell you how to proceed with plans, permits, etc.

A bigger concern may be additional cost for a foundation.

If you are connected to the house it becomes and "attached" garage.
And that almost always requires a foundation wall dug to below the frost line.
No "floating slabs" allowed

If your in VA or KY....I don't think anyone cares....

Assume this....any bedroom must have an egress window....any upstairs room must have 2 ways out. We are doing a 2-story addition...there is the stairway...and then a balcony....

It would also help to post a sketch of what you want.

In either case....because your going 2-story....your going to need engineering...I think your starting to underestimate the extent of the project....going 2-story changes things quite a bit.

In Va:.....NOVA is a code meeting nightmare.Norfolk/coastal area's 'bout the same.City's and towns in the rest of the state generally,care.So we're only left with about 25% or so of places that don't give a chit.Just sayin,BW
