Adequate service for adding 100 sub

Current service consists of (2) 200 amp main panels that feed existing 200 amp sub and 100 amp sub. Will service be adequate to accomodate another 100 amp sub for garage? Mains also service heat pumps, water heater, etc. Elec. co. wants verification from an electrician before they come in and relocate existing cable. Gotta believe I'm safe.

Then call an electrician....

Did you figure you could just print out a post by some random person on an internet garage forum to show them and think that would suffice?

Have him do a load calculation based on what you presently have going and then figure out what you want to do in your shop. Based on that you can figure out whats what.

Thanks Walrus. I'm hoping to avoid adding another service panel and thus the reason for the question. Our builder added the additional 200 amp telling us it would take care of any future additions. Wasn't sure if there was a rule of thumb or case by case evaluation.

Case by case.

Yes, case by case but likely things will be fine. Most garages really add very little to the demand factor, most loads but a few lights are so intermittent, as long as things are not cooking hot now you wont likely notice any difference, one reason is while you are in garage its likely there will be less demand elsewhere. If someone figured for future additions then you are likely good to go.
I got gobs and gobs of stuff, I bet my load rarely peaks over a 100A, then maybe 150 tops while an air comp comes on if several other things are happening, well is intermittent as is welding and air comp, even a 30A walk in cooler runs off and on.
