Adjustable guide die stocks - how to use?

Which direction is the die stock supposed to go onto the rod? Is the guide supposed to go first and then the die (which makes sense) or is the die supposed to go first? Can’t find any instructions anywhere. Talking about these: https://www.irwin.com/tools/taps-dies-sets/adjustable-guide-die-stock-handles

On plain stocks usually the open side is “down” but on these the open side would be up if the guide goes on first. Thoughts appreciated.

The guide goes on first to center the die as it starts.
