I have the Klein Tools Quick Cutter Adjustable Hole Saw. The tool made about 4 decent cuts into sheetrock and then became problematic.
1. The dust shield leaves a ring on the ceiling
2. An inexplicable gouge mark is left inside the circumference of the dust shield and outside the the circumference of the cutting blades. It repeatedly did that for the next 5 holes i made. How the heck is that happening?
3. the pilot bit snapped at the base.

This thing is going in the trash. What adjustable hole saws do you guys like? I see HolePro makes a line of tools for the job. One at $50 and the others $140+ with replaceable parts. EZ HOLE makes one for 160.

I will have to make 100+ cuts within the next year.

Another alternative is stick with the same recessed light (same templates) and buy a hole saw that size and rig up a dust shield.

Thanks

I use a shop vac and a hole saw from my harbor freight kit. Seems to control dust and the cheap hole saw does just fine in sheetrock.

If that doesn't work for you, just buy the size you need. That's what I did. The Google is your friend. It's worth avoiding the headache of adjustable. I've never found one I liked better.

Good idea - just buy a hole saw and rig up a dust shield to it. I can put some kind of non-marring material on the dust shield’s rim to protect the sheetrock.

I use a Lowes (Kobalt) 6" recessed light hole saw. For 4" round boxes i use an adjustable sheet metal hole cutter, which is set and locked for the correct size.

Both work well.

If dust is a concern, use a small cardboard box with a hex drill extension to catch the dust. I just place a bucket under the work and run a shopvac while drilling.

having just done this with ~20 can lights and recessed tiles, i wish i would have used a fix sized steel hole saw. Used the dust cover saw and it worked "ok" but had to make sure to be steady as there were a couple times where it got aggressive and yeah, there went those ceiling tiles.....

Did you use the Klein? If you did, kudos for you for getting through 20 cans.!

For cutting in cans I use a greenlee hole saw with a replaceable blade, never bothered with an adjustable. I just cut the hole and deal with the dust later.

Run of the mill hole saws usually can't be found big enough for 6" cans

Why do you need adjustable ? All ceiling boxes are the same size. The HF should cover most recessed light. Rig up your own dust shield.

I like to use 4” recessed lights - but the hole sizes vary a bit. We’re not talking about a lot - maybe a 1/8” at most. So you’re right the HF with rigged up dust shield should do the job.
