Gents,

An adjustable spanner wrench is used for which automotive repair and maintenance tasks?

Which automobiles (and its associated model year) do adjustable spanner wrenches see much use?

I attached below an example of an adjustable spanner wrench.

Thanks,

Dave

I remember using something like that years ago to change out the old style McPherson struts on Japanese vehicles. They had a outer tube with the cartridge inside held in by a threaded collar. The collar had two holes, or in some cases slots. You would use the spanner to turn out the collar to remove the strut.

the old style (60s-?) Saginaw pwr steering boxes have a "plug" that use a pin style spanner like that. Other than that, I can't think of anything else, but since I'm not a mechanic I'm sure you'll get lots more examples.

marty256,

Do you remember the years and model numbers of the Japanese vehicles you used the spanner wrench to remove the strut?

Thanks,

Dave

its also like this on older the RWD volvos. The bilstein replacements require it. Oem ones can be taken off with pipe wrench.

Late model Dodge trucks use these on the water pump pulley that have screw on fan clutches.

I never used one of those until I started working on hydraulic cylinders. Never had a use working on cars.

Big ones with 5mm pins are used on some VW-Audi cars to hold the viscous fan clutch while loosening the fan. Sometimes used on VW-Audi cam belt tensioners, but the proper fixed tool works infinitely better.

Same for some older VW-Audi cars, but they used a female hex in the top nut. There are special extra-deep sockets that are hollow with a male hex on one end for this. I use a pipe wrench..

Dave I've been out of the automotive business since 1984. I was a front end mechanic and we did a lot of front end work for the local Datsun dealership next door to our Goodyear shop. I would think it would have been the late sixties and seventies Datsuns. I also remember some of the German cars having the replacable struts, though I can't remember exactly which years. Sorry!
