Are you saying that in 20 years of use it felt like a Chinese cheapo, but when the grip came off it magically turned into a fine tool?

No - he said it turned into a Klein. I have a soft spot in my head for their screw drivers, but other than that, not really a fan.

If it's 20 years old, it's probably USA-made? Western Forge, maybe?

It has always felt like a normal everyday adjustable wrench. No lighter or heavier feeling only real difference is it actually stays where it is adjusted too lol. And yes never knew it was a Klein because from the time I got it you could never see the branding thru the rubber cover. And yes made in the USA

Didn’t Klein used to make their own adjustables?
Some reason I’m thinking they did years back. Could be wrong.

Klein made their own adjustable wrenches for a long time, They had swapped patents with a Japanese company (TOP). They are very nice adjustable's. Current wrenches (as of a couple years ago) are Irega, same as most everyone else.

Between Irega & Western forge they make about 90% of the currently available adjustable's.

Yup. I bought one about 8 yrs ago and it was made here but didnt seem like it was Western Forge.
At some point they sourced them from Williams . Maybe 1970's .
