I just watched this YouTube video from a member (CudaChick1968) here, and am super-impressed with the multi-color work, such at 1m50s into the video.

I've done basic, single-color PC before, and it turns out OK, but have no idea how to mask off or whatever is done to get the multi-color effects.

Anyone have a link to decent tutorial?

I'm no pro by any means, but I've done a few multi-colored parts for myself. It just takes a lot of patience - I've never masked off a part for multi-color coverage (but every situation is different and it'd sometimes make sense to mask off a part). That's the beauty of powder coating - you can just wipe away whatever powder you don't want to cure.

Notice all the multi-coloring is on the raised metal parts. You cover the entire surface with the base color, but use a damp cloth or q-tip to carefully remove powder from the raised metal parts that you plan to cover in a different color, then cure it. Let it fully cool and do the opposite - cover the raised metal parts with a different color and remove powder from everywhere else. Depending how easily you can mask off the places you don't want covered, you could do that to save yourself some time. The hardest part is getting an even coat and knowing how the powder will act when it flows out, so that it doesn't liquefy and ruin your multi-color look. I'd bet the valve covers were laid flat in the oven to cure for that reason.

Hope my novice insight helps. Would love to hear from the pros.

Wow, I didn't even see this thread until now. Thanks for the kind words Sokolov and Hounddog -- I love what I do and am honored you noticed and took the time to check out my movie. :D

bartz, your thought process is pretty decent for your self-proclaimed novice status ;) but I'm still not inclined to give away my trade secrets. LOL I've been at this since 1999 and every job is its own distinct and welcome challenge. The customers come up with the color schemes for the most part and I just turn their ideas into reality. I could ask for a cooler "job" but nobody could ever find it for me.

If I'd had the chance to lay out the Powder **** photo shoot today as planned (dang it, no sun), I could show ya Friday night's conclusion to several hours worth of work on another set of multi-color custom valve covers, a TriPower air cleaner and billet breathers. I'll post up again when the pics are done. In the meantime, thanks again guys! I appreciate your time checking it out and putting out the word. << hugs >>

You all have no idea how much your comments truly mean to me. Thank you, most sincerely. I put a lot of love into everything that hits my bench and know from my time here that you're not an easy crowd to please. The caliber of member talent on this board is what keeps me coming back because you ALL inspire me, and help me to realize there are others in the world who remember and appreciate craftsmanship.

And I'm not sucking up either. If I thought you guys were a bunch of asshats I'd tell ya. :D

Thanks again gentlemen!! You've raised my Monday a few notches this afternoon. < hugs > The next multicolored project (after some Starfire Yellow Road Runner hood hinges) is a very old cast iron Coke bench back so stay tuned. Ya'll rock!!
