Advice and recommendations

I “think” I have everything worked out to purchase a building. I’m looking for advice and recommendations for building erectors and concrete work. I live just east of Houston in Chambers County. I’ve spoken to numerous building manufactures, erectors and concrete people. There seems to be a wide range of prices for each part of the build. The building that I’m wanting is a 40 x 80 x 18; in addition I wanted to pour about 1900sqft of flat work. I will need to build up the area for the building and the flat work, what is a fair price for dirt work?

If any of you could recommend anyone and what their prices were I would appreciate the input.

When i built my shop in Texas I used Mueller. They are reputable and often have big sales on standard sizes. I did find them to be slow to respond during the design stage.

Thanks for the reply Jones, Mueller has been great to work with, spoke to them yesterday evening about a few things and they’ve responded quickly with the additions I want.

It amazes me that no one in Texas has any advice, where I come from you normally don’t have to ask for advice; we give it freely, wanted or not, and with an opinion. Ha…Ha…

Thanks again.

Start calling contractors and getting quotes. CHECK REFERENCES!!!

You won't believe the number of people that get references from a contractor and then never follow up, then wonder why the job sucked. It's as simple as a phone call. . .

Wouldn't do you much good - what they charge out here 400 miles from you is likely not even close to what Houston area contractors want to hit you for. Huge difference in demand, costs, permit requirements, restrictions, etc. I got my small slab for $4.25 sq/ft and they did the dirt work and set the re-bar, plus handled the pour. I also know from having lived down that-a-way for a while that unless you get the right people the first time, having it done right means having it done twice.

Thanks guys,

I've called numerous contractors all with widely ranging prices, that's the reason for the post; just wondering what others may have paid. The few contractors that came out and looked at my site likely looked at my home thinking I'm "banking it" and the price goes up, I'm just a blue collared worker who works more than I need to or should.

A few of the references that I've gotten said DO NOT USE those guys, again just trying to find a contractor someone was happy with the quality of work and thought they got a fair deal.

Falcon you are correct we do have a bunch of unqualified labor down here and that's one reason you sometimes find a deal that's too good to pass, but end up paying double just to fix it.

Thanks again for the replies.

Check with the concrete companies, they know who does good work and who shows up on time etc. I would not go by advertizing at all, Good word of mouth from the concrete companies has never been wrong for me.

This is the guy that built my 30 x 50 building. He's also done 2 for my father in law. Very reasonable. He has a foundation guy (Luis) that has a crew that does the dirt work and foundation. Top of the line, both of them.
He is out of Decatur, TX but I know he does jobs elsewhere in the state.

Slice how much dirt did you have hauled in? Dirt here is cheap. Your less than 50 miles away from us. I just got another quote for $4250 in dirt work, which by my estimate is about $3000 too high. I just had dirt work completed by another company, they spread 20 dumptruck loads at 10 to 12 yards each for $2200 including dirt, equipment and labor.

Thanks to everyone who has replied.
