Hi all,
First post here- what a great site!
I’m looking to get my garage organized. Moved in a couple months ago and can’t stand the mayhem any more. I see so many online options for cabinet systems- new age, custom living, bald head, etc. Does anyone have experience with any and can offer advice on a brand and considerations for a good layout?

thanks!

As for layout, I have no suggestion other than what works for you. As to the manufacturer, I have NewAge cabinets in my garageIMG_20201031_185740746_HDR.jpg. I bought the cheaper version and they work great for my garage.

I went with New Age Pro Series. I bought them directly from New Age as they had all the pieces I wanted in stock where other resellers seemed to have spotty inventory and delivery times.

This is what we saw when we bought the house, previous owner's stuff in the garage:

Moved our stuff in, a little cleaner looking:

Drywall patches and paint, new lighting, epoxy/polyaspartic floor, jackshaft openers...

And the New Age Pro cabinets and table, DIY install wasn't bad with two people:

(The black and white 8-square thing is my wife's shoe storage from Ikea, the rolly tool carts are Craftsman.)

The little door on the back wall, the HVAC ducts, and the odd ceiling lines made configuration a challenge. It would have been nice to have a long flat wall to line up a straight layout.

I am not a fan of slat-wall, wall peg board, or overhead storage. I don't store things on the side walls besides the bikes, or near the car doors in the front corners. There is a back yard shed for the mower, lawn tools, etc. This summer I plan to add baseboard molding of some sort.

I did have a different cabinet that I liked in my last two homes which were melamine covered press board with metal wrapped edges for strength and durability. They were great back in the 90s and 2000s but I wasn't able to find them recently. The New Age Pro metal seem like a better product, plus the variety of pieces to mix and match was nice.

Great setups! Reinforces on the new age idea. I have a similar awkward layout with a window across part of the front wall and house vac in a corner so going with a built over time approach might work well.

Is the quality good? I have a craftsman toolbox as well and am ocd with proper ball bearing slides and quality hardware.

Also debating tire storage. I need at least 4 sets stored, which take up a lot more room than desired. I’m inclined to just build my own wood rack but to your point, I don’t have a desire to climb a ladder to fetch tires.

I’m tbd on slat wall, and against peg board. In theory if you have enough cabinet storage there isn’t a reason to have anything out except jacks and air equipment.

I agree on not using side wall space and won’t allow my wife to put lawn gear in the garage

My garage cabinets came from Home Depot. I found their Mills Pride cabinets to be a great compromise between price and quality. Good quality and low prices, several years ago.

Yes, the New Age Pro drawer slides are smooth with ball bearings. One thing I like is you can open all the drawers at the same time unlike some tool chests. The locker doors open right side first/close left side first, as there is a lip on the door edges so you can lock them. I don't need to lock mine so it can be a little annoying, but that's just me.

What I did for my car garage and shop was to buy Seville Classics UltraHD storage cabinets and the Husky HD rolling work bench. The storage cabinets have a 600 pound capacity and honestly would hold more. The doors are stainless but flimsy which doesn't matter. The shelves are powder coated and reinforced and strong. For the price they're hard to beat. Bought them at Sam's Club, shipped to my door. Had to buy the membership but even with the additional $45 membership cost Sam's was the best price by far. There are 3 36" wide, by 18" deep, and one 42" wide by 21" deep.IMG_3118 2.JPG

I have 29’ of New Age Pro and 7’ of the New Age Bold that look the same but are not as deep. The Pro are substantially sturdier. Look for welded cabinets in 18 gauge or thicker clike the Pro and they may be comparable but cheaper. The Bold are thin 24 gauge and not welded.

The cabinets in the garage where we park our car are repurposed kitchen cabinets; they came from Mrs Nadogail's kitchen. The workshop cabinets are the Mills Pride cabinets from Home Depot.

Or used cabinets from someone’s remodel. Old kitchen cabinets are well made. A lot of newer ones are pressboard. But if you want the fancy garage look, buy the fancy garage cabinets!

Last year I was looking at Sabers. The price went up a fair amount due to Covid. I went and looked at the cabinets a few times in person as all said and done they were around 8K total. Both times the cabinets fell apart in my hands at the showroom. The cabinet drawers were very stiff and hard to pull/push. The salesman stated they would wear in over time. That was the nail in the coffin for me. I was not impressed especially for the cost of them.

I started to look at the Husky HD cabinets in matte black. I was very impressed with these cabinets. The price point was half that of the sabers. They are 18 gauge cabinets. Between black friday sales and the military discounts with Home Depot these cabinets were about half price and more cabinets over the sabers. These are mobile workbenches that I have the intent to fab up legs to replace the rollers as I have no intent to roll these around.

here is a link to the to the cabinets

I got (2) large stand up and (8) uppers cabinets. (1) 62 inch mobile. (2) 72 inch mobiles.. (1) 72 inch mobile. The large benches and uppers on one side for work and the other large cabinet and upper on the far side for storage. I should be finishing up the install in the next couple weeks.

I also have the Seville Classic cabinets. Some came from Sams and some I had to order online. I have 3 of the stand up cabinets in the shop. I store camping gear in one, SCUBA gear in another one, and construction tools in the third. I have 2 of the wall mounted Seville cabinets. I also have a 4th stand up cabinet in the house garage for storing food overflow.

We like them. There are better cabinets out there but for the money, it’s hard to beat the Seville cabinets.

I used a set of the Husky cabinets for a hobby room in the house about 3 years ago and I am still impressed with them. They did a great job of packing them for shipment too, you could tell someone had put a lot of thought into it to make sure they did not get damaged.

I'll be the outlier here and say the Craftsman cabinets at Lowes are pretty decent. And they've got pretty much coordinated stuff to match across the board - workbenches, storage systems etc.

All are great ideas! I’m also debating building a small mezzanine since I have 11’ ceilings and that may be easier to store tires. For rack, top consideration is new age at the moment.

Has anyone tried CTech manufacturing? I have ordered several drawer units for service bodies and they are very nice pieces but I haven't laid eyes on their cabinets.

Just had Garage Living Signature cabinets in custom white powder coat installed about a month ago. Love them! The primary reason for this brand was availability of 18” deep, quality steel cabinets in white. Surprisingly limited number of manufacturers that would do this, at a reasonable cost. Baldhead would have been close to double the cost of these. Vault wouldn’t do 18” drawers, Lista doesn’t do any 18” deep, Sonic, Saber, New Age, Husky, Craftsman, etc. don’t do white.

Two sections on the left are 18” deep and right side alcove are 24” deep. All uppers are 14” deep. Not cheap but will be here long after I’m gone. 35’ of 18 gauge steel cabinets were about the same cost as a decent size SnapOn tool box with a hutch.😁
