Hey everybody, new guy from north alabama.
I grew up in a 13,000 sqft shop, and now that ive grown up and am an excavation contractor, i need one again. unfortunately i cant have 13000 sqft, and I don't want to build, as im in the housing market currently, but I'm out of room in our 3 car garage, and have toys sitting everywhere.
When i do find my next home, I'll most likely build a shop on it. I can do so very cheap compared to most, so its no big deal to build and leave a couple years later. I priced a 30x50, electrical and an office area, about $16k.
But for the time being, I dont need a commercial shop, but I would like to have a personal. Most of my work stuff stays on jobsites, so theres no need for a shop there, but it would be nice to have a little extra storage.
I found a guy with a 25x50 shop, actually a section of his shop, and am considering it. My question is, do you think I can survive in that for the time being? It's 350 a month, and storage units around here are 50-80 cents per sqft a month. So thats not bad. Has 220, 16' bay door, lights, wood stove, etc.
I'm not used to not being able to literally do doughnuts inside the shop
Basically what will be in it is:
an 87 s10 blazer currently becoming a rock crawler
maybe occasionally a rzr
a four wheeler on occasion
16' trailer (could park blazer on the trailer to have more room)
occasionally a skid steer or mini excavator may come through, mainly to service
I would like to keep around 250 sqft of it (25x10) as a project area. The issue i'm having is, its 25 feet wide, 50 feet deep, so that makes it a little difficult, plus the 220 is in the back wall.
What im thinking, is having the left side (where 220 is) to be the work area, then having a small "office" type area in the back right corner, i figure 150-200 sqft for that, it has a work bench the width of the building, and shelves the length, so I'll most likely use the back right corner's bench as desk space, and i figure my a table behind that and a bench out of an old 7.3 to use as a couch, mini fridge under bench for plenty of beer
in the front left, having space to have a second project if needed, 25x10, probably where ill stick the blazer and trailer, once i get the blazer finished, I can always move the trailer out, but for the time being would like it inside.
Not sure about the front right. I'm sure itll fill up fast, I have a bad habit of that.
Does that sound about right?
Or should i do my "living" type area in the front right, with a second project area behind that, so it would be closer to the other tools, and ill get full utilization out of the work bench? it would also be right inside the personal door, so that would be nice, walk in the door and grab a beer. i like that.
but it would be a ***** at times to get a second project back there if one is already in the first spot...
I can always pull the trailer out, I dont know. Whose had a similar sized shop with one door and made it work??
