I'd like to build myself a smallish hydraulic press, something that could fit on a table and use say a 6-ton bottle jack. I realize that decent ready-made presses aren't that expensive, but cost is less a factor than size. I literally have no place to store a standard floor press. Nor do I really need anything this heavy duty. Just something that can press out the occasional stubborn hub from a spindle, or maybe straighten a slightly bent bolt, rod or flat beam, and then be stuck in a closet, or better yet, taken apart and stored in a box until the next use.
I've seen YouTube videos for such DIY presses, but even they seemed like more press than I really need. So I was wondering if anyone here had experience of or knowledge about how to do this. E.g. what kinds of steel beams and bolts should I get, and would I need to cut and maybe tap the beams myself? Do you know of links to decent DIY designs for such a press?
Alternately, are there reasonably-priced DIY kits one can buy with most or all of the parts (except the jack, which I already have)? Say, no more than $50-$60.
