Advice on Buying a New Toolbox (Matco)

My Matco guy came to the shop a few days ago and mentioned that up until the 2nd most Matco roll-aways are 25% off and add-ons are 15% off. He offered me an additional 10% off each and a really fair trade-in on my current box so I'm actually thinking of buying a box off him. I was also looking into getting a hutch with a new box but I don't think I can really afford that right now.

All said and done I can get a Matco 6s 6325RX 3-bay box for $6,900 with my $1,000 trade-in based on his first offer, but I told him that's a bit of a stretch for me right now and I'm not sure if I really want to put myself in a financial bind which is true as I really wasn't planing on making a major purchase any time soon. I'm supposed to meet with him tomorrow and he's going to sweeten up the deal a little bit to see if I can afford a hutch with it (current offer on the hutch is $3,300).

I'm looking to see how this deal sounds to you guys, what price I should try to hold out for, and if there's any reason you'd recommend not getting this toolbox.

Oh and I should mention that I'll be paying for this in full on the truck with my credit-card and not financing it or putting it on truck credit.

It's only 25 deep, it's only 25% off. The KRL1033 from snap on is a Better deal. It's bigger at the same price point and most snap on dealers I have seen will beat the pants off Matco on tool box pricing.

I don't think you will be happy with that shallow box for all that money. Talk to the snap on guy, Mac guy, Cornwell guy if you haven't yet make them work for your sale.

Does he have one you can see in person at least compare it to the 6328 which is deeper but even more money and still smaller than the KRL1033

The 6325 is a beautiful box I'm sure, but price seems high and it's only 25 deep, which is shallow for a box of that series. Or look at the other truck tool companies for a better deal, they are out there.

If the dealer is willing to negotiate and you can work a deal your comfortable with I'd go for it though. My MATCO dealer works the best deals on boxes in my area, way better than snap on. Last year I bought a 4325 brand new with a hutch for about $3500 after my trade in, a Kra double bay box which he gave me $3000 for. It's all about working out the best deal.

I would agree with shopping around. My classic was only 24 inch depth and I hated it. My 68 inch epiq is 30 inch depth. Its only a double bank but its bigger than most triple banks. Plus with something like the epiq you can get a powertop

matco 6325 is 36,900 ci
Snap on 68 epiq is 43,922 ci
Snap on KRL 1023 is 44,260 ci

Thanks for the input guys, I was looking at a 25" deep box because one of my friends always complains about his 30" deep snap-on box and not having enough room to open the drawers fully when he has larger cars in his bay. He strongly suggested that I get a 25" deep box, but he may be the odd man out on this subject as it seems most people would prefer a deeper box.

I'm going to see if I can get my Matco guy to bump his 35% off a roll-away offer up to 43% off, the fact that I'll be paying for the box in full should help. I can afford to spend about $7,000 on a new box and that would put a 6s 28" deep box (6328RX) right under $7,000 after tax and my trade-in.

In my area I'm told the Snap-On guy will come down to about that price on the larger KRL boxes for the people who have pumped a lot of money into his wallet. I spent $5,200 on the Matco truck last year and never ran any truck credit and I know I'm a preferred customer, I guess we'll see what kind of deal I can work out.

As foreign as it seems, using their credit often works in your favour. Every profit centre is important to them and certainly the ridiculous interest rates which they get away with may even yield a bigger profit than the margin on the box itself. Subsequently I always inquire if a better deal is available if I use their financing. I also immediately ask if there's a penalty for paying it off right away. From my experience the driver really doesn't care about the financing side of things as his profit is in the box, some have even told me they get a slap on the hand if the consumer pays of the financing within the first month. They all play dumb because they made their money, they were able to get a better deal for their customer at the companies expense and they didn't have to dip into their own profit to make the sale.

In the end and in an effort of keeping the sale with a dealer that has worked hard for you you my want to inquire to see if there's any incentives if you finance it and then pay it off with your credit card.

Very true, but in this case the only financing incentive was that they allow you to miss 12 weekly payments without penalty, the price of the box was actually lower by cutting Matco Financial out of the picture although this will change as the financing incentives change so I agree that it's always a good idea to ask.

I just bought a 6s 6328RX with upgraded casters for $7,500 after tax which was at the very top of my self imposed price limit but also nearly 47% off list price. The best part is that I'm financing it through my credit cards at 0% interest with the only condition being that the rate skyrockets after 14 months so I'll have to pay it off before then which will be easy enough for me to do.

Well here are some pics of that new box I bought, it came in pretty quickly considering that I started this thread on the 2nd. It came a couple days ago but the shop has been busy so I'm still in the process of moving all my tools over to it.

Yeah I paid extra for the fancy 8" casters with low pro rubber, I actually just ordered a blue neon underglow kit, the kit is only $20 on ebay and I think it will look awesome.

j/k, well then again... no I'm sure, j/k :D

I'm not sure about those 8 inch casters, they look unusually large.

6" is a more typical size, but I wanted the 8" casters so it would roll over irregularities in the floor easier, they also brought the top of the box up to what I think is a nice height. It's just a few inches taller then the work table next to it which I always thought was a little to low.

That is a beautiful box. Clean lines, not flashy, just simple elegance. I really like the black / metallic blue combo. The blue handles really make it pop without being in your face gaudy. All in all, a really nice setup.

I have to ask, what is the story behind the Miura? It doesn't look like a kit, but hard to tell from the photos.

Thanks for the kind words, the Miura is a 1967 original that was brought into the shop for a engine and transmission rebuild. On this car the transmission and engine share an oil supply so when the owner blew out the trans it sent a bunch of shrapnel right into the engine causing quite a bit of damage. FYI the piston ring set alone was $3,000 from Lamborghini.

Does this box have 6 inch or 8 inch casters? Can you tell?

I'd say that box has the 8" casters because looking at mine next to it they appear to be the same size, but more definitively that box is the largest triple bay Matco makes and currently doesn't have an upgrade option on the casters meaning that by default all new 6331rx boxes get the largest and strongest casters available. They look just a little smaller in the photo but that box is also 10" longer then mine so that throws off the perspective slightly.

Thanks for looking. I didn't know the box was larger than yours, I thought it was the same size.

That shop I work at specializes in European cars, specifically Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari. We work on anything that comes in the door but our reputation is for working on high-end Euro cars. From time to time we do wind up working on imports and domestics because others shops can't diagnose the problems with the vehicle or the owner of the car wants to take all their vehicles to one shop they trust and we already work on their Porsche.

The Miura was in the shop when I started working there and I never heard what the owner was doing when all this happened but people usually aren't to forthcoming with how they damaged their cars.
