I want a new multimeter and am hoping for some advice from you guys.
I am an electronics technician in the geophysics industry now and possibly the steel industry in the future.
I think i have narrowed it down to either the
FLUKE 233:

or the FLUKE 117:

I'd especially like to hear from anyone who has used the new 233 with the removable screen. Useful feature or gimmick????

Thanks

I own 3 Fluke meters and they're excellent quality tools. I would avoid purchasing overly fancy stuff... you probably won't need it as much as you think. I would purchase one that's made in the US rather than the Chinese version.

I got a chance to try the 233 at a trade show and it's pretty cool, however unless you need to be that far from your work (I.E. hazardous environment) I'm not sure it's worth the extra $$$. The more bells and whistles, the more chance of failure.

the fluke 117 isn't an electronics multimeter, its just an ordinary electricians multimeter, it won't do milliamps or millivolts.

I would recommend checking with the company you work for. My company requires a fused meter with a CAT IV rating @600V. The remote displays are great on electrical cabinets with a high calorie rating so you can hook up the meter and close the cabinet to get out of the hot ARC flash PPE. I have a Fluke 787 and love it.

I own the 117 and I can tell you for sure that it does millivolts in both AC and DC. As far as milliamps, I have never used it for that purpose but I believe it will do that as well. Do you have this meter?

I have a 117 and use it for general day to day checking. I end up working on stuff that is sometimes in hard to get to places. I would love to have a 233 so that i could keep the screen with me while I was making adjustments at the computer and could keep the meter at the equipment instead of having to go back and forth. I think if you can afford it the 233 is a great meter and will probably be one of my next purchases. I already own 4 fluke meters but in my opinion knowing is better then guessing and a meter is a good way to know.

sorry no i don't have this meter, i was getting a bit mixed up, it does'nt have milliamps nor micro amps, don't know where the millivolts came from, if you type fluke 117 into u tube and look for user id EEVBLOG he does a really good review on this meter and also the 233, i have'nt seen it for some months so got a bit mixed up somewhere

I have a 117 and really like it, but it is a secondary meter for me. My 87 is used in sensitive applications. For the price of the 233 I would go up to an 87 for electronics work and then get the 117 or 233 as a second meter.
