Finally got all my components and starting to install lights in workshop and have a question on lighting height over workbench. I have 10 foot ceiling height and I am installing 4 foot led lights with 2 5000k 2664 lumen bulbs per fixture. My workbench is about 21 feet long on one wall and 12 feet on the other wall. I am installing 4 fixtures on the 21 foot side and 2 fixtures on the 12 foot side. My workbench is 3 feet high. My question is, should I install them directly on the ceiling or drop them down lower? And if so how low should I hang them? Here is a picture of my messy workbench. Thanks everyone in advance.

I have a soffit above each of my workbenches at 8' since I have 14' ceilings in my garage. The soffit is for storage and a chase for future stuff. It sticks out 18" so it was a great place to mount track lights. I can aim the lights over my work space with some angled so not to be working in a shadow. I really like the way they light up my chop saws.

I suggest you hang fixtures at about 8 ft. Hang on chain from ceiling.

These benches both have 4 lamp HO T5 fixtures above them. Many folks thought the glare below 12' or so is too much. I tried a couple and love the brightness ( old eyes).

The above bench is at 8'

This is at 10'...

Try it with temp set up and see what works for you.

I ended talking to a guy that owns a wood working shop that has 10 foot ceilings who mounted them right on the ceiling and really liked them so I did the same and they are very bright, even for my old eyes.

I was going to add I put some T5HO - 4 tube fixtures on an 11' ceiling over my bench and it seems great right there. Did not try any other orientation but satisfied with that result.
