Greetings,

New detached 20'x30'x10' garage will begin early October and I need to pick out a man-door and window for it. I have about a $500 budget for both. Door will be 36" wide. Window will be a 4'x3' slider. The box stores leave me with options of just Jeld-Wen and Reliabilt for doors and Jeld-Wen, Pella and PlyGem for windows. Not sure if one really is better than another at that price.

Then there is the question of either steel or fiberglass for the door. The garage will be stick built 2x6 and insulated and sheetrocked. Looking for any advice as to what manufactures to look for or to stay away from.

Thanks!

Are you building or do you have a GC ? If the latter, where does he buy his stuff from ? You maybe able to get a better door sourcing it from his supplier.

Almost every ReStore I've been in have $2,000 industrial doors for 50bucks.
Just a thought.
And
Get a 40 inch if ReStore has one.

We had our house built 1.5 years ago and they used PlyGem double hung windows. I guess that means they are builder grade but we are happy w/ them.

I have started using Poly Carbinate for Windows that I want to keep people out of.

I used polycarbonate for storm windows on my basement windows. It was flat when I put them together but the stuff is pretty wavy after one summer.

Doors and windows are like lawnmowers most are made at the same factory. Case in point I bought a door at lowes and another at a small lumber yard. They are almost exactly the same. The plugs for the vinyl window trim were the exact same plugs.

Pick a door you like just make sure to paint the bottom of the door.

I got my man-door from our lumber yard, Brosco brand. Same company I used for majority of interior doors in the house. 3-0 fiberglass,6-panel, frame saver jambs it was ~$350. The quality is a step above what’s available at our HD or Lowe’s for $200.

For windows I went with non-opening picture by Jeld Wen... went a little cheaper since they are fixed panel, so no mechanism or seals to go wrong. Not bad, but certainly not Anderson 400 quality like on the house.

I wish I had used FrameSaver 11 years ago. I have one I'm going to need to replace the frame on because I didn't.
The bottom 6" or so of the door frame is synthetic so it won't rot.

I have seen video of a rioter with a Baseball Bat trying to break store windows, the bat just bounced back at him.

I am sure it was a Polycarbonate window.
