The garage I am building is a 2x6 stick built. I have been back and forth about the siding. We ended up doing a steel roof and steel siding instead of vinyl.

I have put steel siding up on a pole barn but never a stick built. Is it much different? I am using 1/2" osb sheathing.

Slab was just poured friday, i will be doing a separate thread for the build. Thanks for the help :rocker:

By steel siding do you mean polebarn raised rib panels or the lap siding? I would highly suggest building a rain screen so condensation doesn't turn the OSB to mush.

It is raised rib panels. I was told I could attach them right to the osb after using a house wrap.

If you use exposed fasteners then there is always the possibility of water getting in and the OSB will indeed turn to mush. If you are intent on this design then use ice & water shield (instead of house wrap)on the area not protected by the roof overhang.
You might look at the various rain screen designs/materials or change to standing seam products with hidden fasteners.

I went with vinyl siding and metal roof on my stick built. It looks better and more residential matching my house and other buildings. So wife is happier. Won't every rust even when I'm gone.

If it's green in color that is the "zip system".

Spike, a lot of things are suggested, but they don't have to deal with the results 10,15, or twenty years from now. Nor will they pay for the resulting damages.

If you say that using exposed fasteners could have the possibility to have water come in, how can people use exposed fastener panels on the roof? i have seen guys go right over tar paper covered osb with no cleats.

I am going with metal for siding because the cost is much cheaper and is less time consuming to put up. we live in a sub division out in the country so the residential look doesnt matter so much.

just because people do it doesn't mean it's right. Many of the raised rib panel don't recommend installing over OSB or plywood, they recommend purlins. ***No*** manufacture condones installing any metal directly over roofing felt. It either needs to be a synthetic underlayment or a layer of rosin paper over the roofing felt. Raised rib panels were originally sold as AG panels for agriculture pole barns. These buildings typically have no OSB or drywall and small leaks are immaterial to the equipment and animals that are inside. The exposed fasteners will leak over time, I have replaced all the roofs washers on my pole barn that was built in 2001 already. It's of *MY*opinion that houses should never have exposed fastner roofs and nice shops/garages should seriously consider another option. Hucksters sell the durability aspect but that is really standing seam/snaplock roofing with hidden fasteners.

Also remember many people in the my labor intensive trades such as rough framing, concrete finishing, and roofing are complete idiots. Hard, hot, back breaking work doesn't attract the best and brightest. This is not to say there are some very intelligent and skillfull individuals in these trades, just less of them unfortunately. The consumer has to be vigilant and knowledgeable if the expect the best.
