Winter is coming. I would like to clean up the clutters in the garage to make room for my car, and I'm looking for ideas, tips, etc., to organize the garage. Will you please share suggestions or point out to a couple good threads?

Many thanks in advance.

Shelves help! Cabinet doors on the shelves look cleaner.

Do you have a picture of your clutter so we can see what you are up against.

I've rearranged stuff in my garage a bunch if times, but the truth is the only real decluttering I've ever done was with trash bags and multiple trips to the dump.

If you have the ceiling height, you can build a small loft.

1. Get rid of junk. Sell or give away anything you're not going to use again.

If you have bikes, get them off the floor.

If you haven't used it in the last year, you likely won't. Purge, purge, purge.

Take what you need to keep and organize, organize, organize.

Get as much off the floor as possible: Shelves, shelves, shelves; brackets, hangers, and containers.

Make putting things away a weekly habit.

You'll be motivated to keep it that way when you can actually use your garage.

Remember, most Americans keep their $30,000 SUV parked in the driveway so that they can store $1500 worth of **** in their garage. Don't be that guy.

1.remove all trash/scrap
2.sell/give away items of no use to you
3. A place for everything and everything in its place
4. Racking is key. Also things like bikes can be hung upside down from the roof
5. A small garden shed can be a real space saver.

I am on step 5. Just built a 10X12 shed beside the garage and now the garage is almost clean. Just need a couple more lights and 1 more shelf built.

I subscribe to the philosophy that if you forgot you had it, then you should get rid of it. I don't have a lot of space, though...I just believe there's no need to hoard **** forever.

there are 3 basic levels you should have shelves:
work height, great for heavy objects or workign and enough space under for really big really heavy stuff
eye height, you can see everything on the shelf makes it easy to find stuff
reach height, your storage bins of stuff less used, high enough to be out of the way but low enough you won't need a ladder to get it

I *just* went (asterisk is for the 6 month duration) through a pretty severe cleaning updating and organization.

My garage was a junk pile - I took the extra step to paint, etc.

Best Advice I have afterwards: One type of storage isn't going to work. I needed a combination of cabinets, shelves, overhead, etc.

I spent a long time figuring out how to store and be able to easily access my stuff.

Once you've been through the steps above - you still need to come up with something that is usable and cleanable "daily".
