At that price, I would be inclined to say the info is correct, but the picture is wrong. And if I search on "PTO5249" I come up with a bunch of websites that have it for cheap with picture not matching description. I just bought both the 1/4" and 3/8" 45t Proto off of ebay. I thought I got a deal on the QR 3/8" at $38 shipped in new condition. Looks like $45 is about the cheapest I see the J5249XL (no QR).

This thread was sooo long ago, i’d really hate to think SK Farmer didnt buy that rathet yet... btw Advance auto is doin 50% off gearwrench mechanic sets... so for $50, you get a 72t with sockets for free...

i will assume you meant to say i have not bought that ratchet. no i did not buy it and i am not even interested.

people get so hung up on ratchets. especially dual 80's. they really are not the end all-be all that so many think they are. if you like pretty chrome and spending lots of money then they are great i suppose but in reality they don't do anything any better or different than any other good quality ratchet. i much prefer the 60/72/84/88 tooth apx/danaher ratchets with thinner and smaller heads. not a fan of the direction lever of the snap-on either.

jmop, find something you like and don't get all worked up about what brand it is or what country it came from. i prefer us made when i can but there are some damn fine ratchets made in other parts of the world as well.

Oh! You didn’t then. Sorry about that assumption then, figured that you weren’t gonna give this purchase much thought, seeing you already have great ratchets.

And you’re right, people clamor too much on about them. I only pointed out (with a link) to make a matco ratchet for $33, and you get all the criteria you wanted. Its been working great for me so far by the way

Used Snap On or Matco would get my vote since you are ruling out Gearwrench. I too prefer the Matco/Armstrong to the SO.

no problem. i may try one of the proto rats if i stumble upon one but i won't go out of the way for it. someday i will get one of the sk teardrops and an sk dual pawl kit for some of my sk rats but i really don't need them. my ratchet purchases are now based on wants rather than needs. sometimes i use something different because i want to but when it comes to the standard handle 3/8, i randomly use a proto big dawg(hard handle or chrome depending on the mood), armstrong, matco, sk or gearwrench with an 88 kit.

i don't have any big reason to add anything to the mix or to even take my dual 80 out of long term storage( the top of my desk) right now. i really like my cornwell, rhft (cman and armstrong) sk tuff1, sweatheart bonney, williams and many others but they just rarely get pulled out.

Snap on f80

you know, i don't care what anyone uses but i always question someone who just bops in with (insert snap-on item here) whenever anyone asks a question and offers nothing else.

not i want one, i have one, they work well or any other type of comment. i own some of almost every tool brand common in the usa, including snap-on. i feel if someone takes the time to ask a legitimate question then they deserve a legitimate answer. an answer that at least gives them sort of idea on why it would be a good choice or may work for them.

if you truly feel the f80 is the best choice, which i don't think it is, why not give a reason?

^^^True^^^ for example I LOVE the FN100 RHFT ratchet over the F80, and I own both.

The FN100 has a more classic feel, and today’s tech in it, and aside from the “dead-silence” I only get fron the mac cam ratchets, its pretty quiet. But Im not throwing an FN100 around like an GSF80 industrial black. I also have 88t Matco, 120xp Gearwrench, Husky/Stanley taiwan, SK-wayne era, and blue point ratchets... its just for the different lengths in handles and swing you know?

I really like the DT upgrades, especially on the 3870 and 3770. My 45170s are short enough I don't notice being short of teeth. One thing I like about the DT100 1/2" drive is that it has 4 teeth of engagement instead of 3. It appears to be stronger.

The new Matco BFR88G and AFR58M have become my go to ratchets as of late. I like the way they feel and sound. Plus were the head tapers down to the neck is comfortable when spinning a fastener rapidly. The rubber handles are nice as well. The snap on 80's are great ratchets but when rapidly spinning a fastener the head doesn't taper as much to the neck and IMO it is just doesn't feel as nice.

Well for me, I'll take Charlize Theron head on Kate Upton's body. Lol quick, someone photoshop up a pick of a Williams handle with a F80 head stat!

Tool ****!
