Advice on vises

Hi all,

There's an estate sale auction that is going on near my house and there are 3 vises for sale in the auction. This vise will be used - it'll get mounted to my work bench. It would be my first vise, and will be used for holding things, having thing hit against it (knocking rusty parts apart), holding things while glue dries, etc.

The first 2 pictures are of a red vise. The next 2 pictures are of a similar blue vise, and the last 2 are of a Kurt precision machine vise.

I don't have the opportunity to see these in person (location is about 2 hours out of town but near relatives we'll be visiting).

So, I was looking for some help on identifying the vises and suggestions on what you think fair market value is on them, essentially sight unseen, as the pics provided by the auctioneer are not that great.

Thanks in advance!

Ryan

I'm not sure what the red one is, but it's a light/med. vise.
The blue one is a Record and will hold up well.
The last one is for machine work.

One of our other canadian members will have a better handle on the prices, but the one you want is the blue Record. It's a good english made vise that will serve you well for a long time as long as you don't abuse it.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm at $20 on it for now - any input on what the good number is on the max you'd pay for it is much appreciated!

That Kurk Anglock is a top of the line machinist vise. It looks in decent shape as well. Definitely pick that up if you can.

The Record is a really nice vise. Are you at $20 negotiated or what you're willing to spend? I would expect to go in and have to spend more than that, probably at least $50. It's a great vise and if you're going to be using it frequently, I would say it's worth it. On the other hand, the red one swivels so that could be a nice thing to have as well.

I'd go $50 for the Record and $50 for the Kurt without even blinking.

Much more after I had some time to think about it and when others start to raiser their bids.

Get all 3 for under $100 and you've got You **** score. ;)

Red exposed screw Ram vise looks like Canada brand of Craftsman maybe ?? That would be a decent general use vise.

Blue Record vise is keeper for sure. Get that one for sure up to $75 or so.

Last machinist vise/drill press vise (Kurt brand) would be handy to have and quality keeper brand. You may be only one interested in that, so keep a low profile and pick it up cheap.

Thanks guys. It's an online auction with an in-person preview by appointment only, and 1-2 pictures per item. Bidding's open for a week (closes Wednesday) so we'll see where it goes. Maybe I'll check in on Wednesday before the auction ends for some final advice.

There's not really any other tools in the auction - an HD Zenith bench grinder, HD Zenith drill press, and some junky modern pliers and screwdrivers. Most of it is old, incomplete cutlery and dining sets, furniture, etc.

Really appreciate everyone's thoughts and opinions!

I have bought many Kurt vises in auctions and have never gave less then $200 for one older then the one you are interested in. But that one looks like it has been modified, something has been added to the back side of the Static jaws support and it also looks like the 1/2 tie down clearance holes have been slotted. It is pretty much useless as a bench vise but one of the best vises for machining.

I have a 5" Record and of the dozen or so good American vises I own it's one of my favorites. IMO, $100 wouldn't be too much to spend for that. It'll outlast you and your grandchildren.

The Kurt is a top of the line machinist vise. If you can pick that up for under $150, you will easily be able to flip it for a decent profit. I've got a couple of pretty decent vises on my milling machines, but a gen-u-ine Kurt is high on my wish list.

Hi guys,

So, the bidding is getting a bit out of hand on the vises - looks like someone knows what these vises are.

So, in a bit of luck, there's ANOTHER auction with a vise and some other stuff. The wording is a bit cut off but it looks like it might be a Wilton? See pic 4 for a more in-depth shot.

Also, any ideas on what the punch is? See pics 1-3.

Thanks guys!

Ryan.
