Hi, I am new to the forum and joined to find out more about the vices I have been given. I have never owned a vice and then friends of mine were having garage clear outs and said would I like their vices that had really never been used and had stood around for years and years.

I said yes and for some strange reason I took a shine to them both and wanted to learn more about their history, quality and purpose. I have cleaned up one of them, not resorted as I have not stripped it down, just clean and painted. I would like to learn how to do it and have another go.

I have a few questions please, I have a Fortis no6 and a Record No3, can anyone tell me what these vices are, what they would be used for, perhaps their value and age.

The pictures are of the stages of my clean up. Any comments would be grateful

Mark

Welcome to the forum!

Nice green on that Fortis!

I'm guessing you're in the UK, but you might want to add your location to your profile, it's very helpful with getting help....

So, in terms of information, both are great brands. The Record #3 is the quintessential British vice - good size, good quality, ubiquitous (schools etc would have used benches and benches of these). Worth a lot in vice terms, not worth a lot in pounds sterling. On the Fortis, I'll let someone else weigh in.

I guess the only thing that would comment at this stage, since you're asking, is that picking out the lettering is more of a US manufacturer thing than a UK thing. It doesn't matter a jot, of course, they're your vices and you should do them how you like them, that's all that matters.

Would be great to see some more pics when you get these installed and in use

I would take that as a challenge if my vise had Unbreakable stamped right into the casting! Nice refurbs on both those. Fortis and Record are both great vises from what I have seen.

They would be used for holding/clamping things, securely. :headscrat:headscrat

Thanks for the warm welcome and info. I will add more pictures of the Record when I finish it off. I was wondering if the numbers meant that they would be used for a specific type of job or if the vices had a specific special purpose.

I've heard terms used like fitters vice, mechanical and engineering vice.

Is there any way I can get hold of technical data on these vices?
