Hi all

I just collected a 1958 Delta Wood and Metal 14" Band Saw (1958 by serial number list on OWWM) but I don't know and can't determine the model. It needs some work, lots of cleaning, new belts and adjustments. One of the bakelite knobs that holds on the belt covers is stripped. Is there some kind of epoxy that I can fill it with then drill and tap for the thread on the machine? Or must I try and find a good original?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!
Steve

The one I have is from the 50s and the black phenolic knobs are also beat up, but still work. I was planning to glue in metal threaded inserts (3/8-16) when it came time to fix mine. I think that tapping or putting in inserts is always risky with old brittle plastic, but I'd prefer taking my chances with the inserts.

check https://www.mcmaster.com/ and see if they have something close, that functions and looks close to period correct.

EDIT.

Thank you, I just ordered a set from McMaster Carr (part 6479K82), if these look the I'll use them while I find a suitable insert for the original.
Thank you both!

some sort of a thread insert would be what I would try, or epoxy a stud in the knob and use a nut in place of the stud on the other half
Yeah that would be all right. But without looking at it I don't know if you can get a nut on the back of the stud. Might have like a welded nut, but with that year more than likely a stud threads into the casting.
If you wanted to glue a stud into the existing knob, I'm sure youcould remove that stud and put it aside, and just glue a different stud.

That way if the stud was epoxied in the old
Bakalite knob there would be less stress on the knob l wound think.

Are you a member at OWWM
old wood working machines?
There is a WTB and a for sale section for wood machines and another section for metal machines.
You can probably post on both but again check the rules about that.
You have to sign up and everything but read the rules and pay attention to them because they're pretty strict on the rules.
But there's a lot of nice guys over there and a lot of valuable information.
Just Google it I don't have the link handy.

The 3-inch diameter might be an issue since the originals were about 1.75". There's not much space by the lower blade guide assembly. I think your saw uses the LBS-177 and you can buy them on the auction site:
