Well guys here’s another issue I’m having. DIY and learning as I go from my mistakes…. Framed up my lean to this week. Got a lot done. Only to realize your suppose to stagger purlins? Will be prorib roof I was hoping to put on tomorrow. Rafters are 2x12 on 2 foot centers. Purlins are on flat 2x4s laid flat. Also another screw up I overlooked was I grabbed smooth shank nails for my nailer and not ring shanked. What’s you guys thoughts?

So all the joints are on the same truss? I'd add some bracing across that joint (additional purlins) to tie it all together.

I don't know if it's worth it, but a 3" screw may be worth adding at each purlun/truss joint, or every other?

This may sound sucky but it isn't... yet. You can still pull it apart partway and set your purlilns offset... you can double nail what you've done (on the good side smooth shanks are easier to separate aand renail, so that's a win)... Sure, you have to redo work, cosing you a day or 2, but it's nothing that can't be redone...

I guess I'm a little lost what the OP is calling a purlin and why it needs to be staggered...

What if I were to lay another row of purlins right beside those and make sure there different offsets? Either right beside other ones or split the difference and do 1 foot spacing. I’d use construction screws and only screw the prorib down to those purlins?

To reinforce the lack of “staggered joints”, I would probably just put Simpson straps on the 1 1/2” side of each purlin, centered over each joint and call it good. This will resist the whole roof “pulling apart” on that rafter or all uplifting slightly telegraphing a “line”/“tiny ridge” along that rafter. By the way I see amateurs do that ALL THE TIME and most just move on (purlins, siding, deck boards, drywall etc etc etc! : )

You can use the little hardened nails they sell with all the Simpson hangers, (and probably smash your fingers).. or Simpson sells rated screws now that I prefer

Thanks guys! I ended up doubling purlins with screws and made sure to only fasten roof to those outlines. Other are along for ride. Basically I went and got 16 footers to stagger to next rafter so there not on same rafter for the joints. Just got roof on and corner trim

When in doubt, build it stout. A few extra nails or additional blocking will be a lot cheaper than a failure.

A little lost here, are you talking about not staggering the purlins so they start/land on different rafters ?

Full, full, half.
Half, full, full
Full, half, full

That's what I would do and start driving ring shank nails. I wouldn't pull anything apart.

Not sure of your location. Thats potentially a wind catcher so add a generous amount if hurricane straps. Cheap insurance.
