Im just going to start off by saying Im new on here but Ive done my fare share of lurking around here before joining. But anyways I went on the s-o truck the other day  and I was looking at the classic 78 roll cab so I asked him if he still had a used one but he had just sold the one he had a couple weeks earlier that he wanted 2500 for but he said he would let the new one that is old stock go for 2700 :wtf: I know that is a really good deal because the list price for that box is 3625 the box is candy apple red with black trim in staid of chrome which I like because I have never seen one that color before (was it a special model last year?) but any ways what do you guys think about this deal ? thanks for any input

I think your money would go farther with a Craftsman professional series toolbox or a Remline box. Just my opinion. Then you would have extra cash for tools.

Looking at the sears site, list price for a 37" craftsman professional box is $2999. The closest equivalent i saw is the 56", which lists for over 4 grand.

List price for the classic 78 says $4375 on the snap-on site. I'd say $2700 is a good deal.

I would take the deal snap on is running that thing where you spend so much money and get so much off, a guy i work with just bought a classic 78 before running this for like 4200. I would go with it or try to find a snap on KRL that is used. Craftsman professional boxes though improved are still a glorified homeowners box, obviously you mention the snap on truck so you must be a mechanic by trade and you know what they say about the craftsman mechanic. (im not sure what they say i used to work with a guy who would just say that and would say "thats what they say!"):p

Let's not turn the guys first post into a snap-on vs. craftsman thread. I'll just stick with saying "IMO, $2700 is a good deal for a new classic 78"

What he is probably quoting you on is a special edition that was only available thru the franchisee conference that was held a couple of months ago. $2700 is a smokin deal on a new Classic 78. You will not get a better price on a new box.

Thanks for all the advise I think Im going to go ahead and buy the box it seems like a no brainer now. The difference in the list prices I have is because Im from canada I guess tool boxes are the one thing that are cheaper up here! But Im just a 2nd year aircraft mechanic apprentice and I bought most of my snap-on tools with the student discount and have pretty much no space in my old box and need to upgrade. So I want to get something that should last a long time and not need replacing in 5 years.

Well if your going to check craigstlist, I'd look at Matco and Mac boxes as well. They're just as good if not better then the Snap-On boxes and usually go for cheaper. It's all a matter of opinion but while I do love Snap-On boxes, they're not always the very best. They do seem to have the best resale value, though.

I see KRL boxes on CL for as low as $1500. I even see it for a KRL722, but it was out of state. I think $2700 is too much for Classic series even though it's new. I have a used 78 and I'm happy with it because I got it for a fraction of what you are considering paying for it. If I had to do it again...I get a KRL722 if I can get it for $1500. Otherwise, I'm happy with my 78. For $2700...I'm definitely get a used KRL722 and you will be happy because there are a few that were less than a year old. There are others that are several years old. Good luck.

chadster nailed it. That is a very nice looking box that was available only to dealers at the conf in Orlando. The Candy Red/Black trim is a sharp looking box and that is a nice deal on it.

You might find a better deal on CL but then again, I know guys that are still waiting on a good deal and they have been looking for years. It depends on what part of the country you are in as to how good a deal (if any) you can find.

How would the build quality be different between Snap-On & Extreme & Mac & Matco?

Looks like Extreme uses 18ga draws and 20ga main.

Thanks, JASTECH

I have been looking on craigslist and other classified sites but there is hardly any used boxes for sale :( and the ones that do come up are usually pricey between 2000-2500 for those classic 78's have even seen a few they want about 3000 for :wtf: :headscrat but as far as boxes I kind of had my mind set on a s-o one because I want it to (hopefully) be the last one I have to buy

Good deal for a new box, YES. But seems like something only and idiot would buy when Craigslist around here is loaded with classic 78 boxes in great shape for $1500. Would you rather give that $1300 to the snap-on man or keep it???? But someone needs to keep buying the new ones so smarter folks can buy used ones for 1/2 price.

Yep. Same here. I'm seeing the Classic 78 and relative equivalents from SO go used (in great cond) for $1500 or less. If don't know if that color commands a premium, but I got a very, very lightly used black 78 from the SO guy for $2000. He let me set up my own terms on the truck account as well.

Check the other Classic 78 threads.

Resale value of boxes is getting cheaper, and who knows, maybe is headed for the toilet, though I know some guys who wanted to sell boxes are holding on to them, and least for now.

What city are you in?

Apparently neither of you have read all of the posts in this thread. He is in Canada and is not seeing an abundance of used boxes on Craigslist in his area.

If you are so proud of the Harbor Frieght, why put the Snap-On badge on? Seems like putting a BMW badge on a Hyundai. I mean, to the guy thats doesn't know any better, the new Sonata looks a lot like a 5-series.

Canada's a big place and there are several cities where craigslist has a "presence". Maybe he's in the Tundra, but the border states' lists might have something as well. That said: one cannot ignore the reality that resale prices on SO boxes have decreased significantly in many markets.

I live in vernon b.c. and I have been looking for about the past 6 months and so far the cheapest price on a used (but still nice) box I have found is $2000 they just dont seem to come up very often the s-o dealer usually has a few that he gets in on trades but he wants 2500 for one in good condition. To me personally I would rather spend 5-600 more on a brand new box then a pre-owned one but thanks for all the advise and info on the box everyone

Can you buy one cheaper through SEP? (Student Excellence Program)

I never did get a straight answer on the price of a classic 78 but I was told by the guy who did all the dealing with the student Excellence program and he told me they dont give very big discounts on the tool boxes only about 15-20% off list price.

That *****. Even the tool boxes in the U.S. are about 50% off. You might want to double check?? Maybe you can log in online to SEP and get a price that way.
Good luck.

haggle with the man, tell him $2200 and you'll take it, let him mull it over. Chances are he'll sell it to you just to be rid of it and free up the cash he has ******* in it.
