So many unheard of brand names. I'm pretty leery of unknowns when it involves pulling, lifting, etc. But I also don't want to tie up a hundred bucks in a seldom used unit. Let's just say I want my cake and eat it too. Suggestions?

I bought a pair of Lug-All branded ones back in 1988 or 1989. They were on "sale" at a contractor supply house called Drive-Kore in Mechanicsburg,PA. It sticks in my head $110. each. I have used mine HARD. But, i expect, at this point they will outlast me. And, Drive-Kore still exists, too!

I picked up a Strongway from Northern Tool for $50. 2-ton capacity. I figured it would do what I needed done and last for as long as I would need.

I have two from Harbor Freight. They work fine. I had one, another guy borrowed my scissor lift and didn't listen when I told him the lift could only go on the trailer going forward while I was loading it. When finished, he loaded it in reverse and when he couldn't get the traction do drive on, bought a come along and used it to drag the lift on the trailer. The lift weighs 4000 pounds and he used it to drag it up the tilt bed trailer with the brake automatically set on one wheel. Then he decided that giving me the come along that I don't need would be payment. Now I have two hanging in the shop for that one time every three years I need a come along.

My newest is a 4 ton from Tekton. Works very well , have an older one. ( craftsman -2 ton from 1980 ) has held over the years but I always grab the 4 ton first.

What I have found is that you want one with dual pawls working on a steel spindle. Make sure that the pawls are fastened to the spindle with more than a press fit or a crimp. The one that I have that has lasted has the pawls welded to the spindle.

Recently picked one up at tractor supply to replace my old one that I found in a parts-car trunk most of 40 years ago.
Used it to replace garage door springs. The old one has started to bend through the body and I didn't trust it with those springs.
