I'm searching for a garage heater which would be affordable, reliable, SAFE and gets the job done. I haven't even begun the search, not quite sure where to begin! I want to get it as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend. So to tell you the truth I don't even know what to look for. My price range would be no more than $200 or even less if that's possible. :eyecrazy:

You'll need to supply info like how big the garage is, if it's insulated or not, and where you're located so we know what type of temperatures you're dealing with.

You're going to be left to radiant, electric or a portable propane heater in that price range. As mentioned without knowing the size, insulation and his expectations its hard to say. I'll be the first to say 200 isn't a lot to work with. Where are you located? knowing the climate would help as well.

I have this one and am very happy with it. It is definitely enough to keep my ~1000sq ft comfortable.

This one isn't quite as powerful, but might be better for a tight budget.

Either would require 240V plug. Kind of shooting in the dark here though. As was said, more information about the size/insulation level of the garage and the climate would be good.

I have a 5Kw electric heater. Paid 75$ used but ceiling mounted 5kW unit cost around 300$. With current electricity rate in Quebec (8cents kWh) it cost 0.40$ an hour so it's not that bad. I do have to start it an hour (or 2 when really cold) before working in the garage but no big deal for me. Weekend wrencher here...

Safe, take little space, easy to install and to run.

500 sq. ft insulated garage btw...

I just got a Mr Heater Hero for my garage. I've used it just twice, but it's great. Heats the 2 car garage (400 sq. ft)allowing me to work on my car when the outside temp. wouldn't otherwise allow it. Cost about $150, and runs on the same propane tank used for the gas grill. The fan can run on battery power which is a nice touch.

.

I am really liking the looks of this unit. I have been looking for an air handler from a heat pump with electric strips to mount to the ceiling but a couple of these may be a good alternative. I have 1200sqft to heat.

I think you would be happier with an air handler, pick one up on ebay new for cheap (goodman).... Then you have option to add ac/heat pump later on :)
