Affordable Lean-To?

I have a 16' Wide x 45' Long garage. It was originally built by the previous owner as a wood shop/gardening shop, it actually has French Doors on the back wall haha.

I have cleared the land behind the shop, to the back fence line. An area the length of the shop (45') and 20' back to the fence.

My original plan was to build a free standing Lean-To, with the roof right up under the eave of the garage. Steel roof, 4x4 studs. We did some rough pricing and its going to be more than planned.

I then wondered if it would have been cheaper/easier to remove the fascia and soffit and tie in to the rafter tails, and continue the shingled roof.

Has anyone built a lean-to on their garage before? What did you use and why?

It would be nice if the lean-to could evolve into having sides and doors, and a concrete floor at some point. But for now I need a covered space to park lawn mowers, a project truck and other stuff out of the weather.

I live out in the country. I am not concerned with building codes, permits or the Pope's approval. Just getting some ideas on building supplies and why you choose what you did.

I built this one over the winter. I blocked between the rafters and attached a ledger board to them, then built the lean to off of the garage.

I think I have $700-$800 in it. It is 16x32 and since it is behind the garage where no one can see, I used galvalume instead of green panels to keep the cost down.

The corner post line up with the garage walls, so it would be pretty easy to wall it in if I ever wanted to.

Nice job! That is exactly what I had in mind. Although my garage is a shingled roof and I wondered how I would make the connection from the steel to shingles. I didn't think a big piece of flashing would work.

Are those 2x6's on top? Whats the span between the 2x4's?

I have a 16'x28' garage and built a 16'x14' last year off the back side gable. I used 2x8 rafters 24" OC and 4x6 posts set in gravel. I used rough sawn white pine for the purlins and screwed the metal roofing directly down to the purlins. It cost about $300.

Again, Southeast GA. Our houses are on slabs, we don't worry about frost :).

Each 4x4 post is sandwiched between 2 16 foot 2x6s that run to the ledger board on the garage and are blocked ever 2 feet. There are 2 10 foot spans and one 12 foot span on the end with the garage door. It is all treated 2x6.
