Based on the references I'm seeing, HID lamps don't nearly as long as CFL. While they may have a more efficient output, the cost to replace them as compared to the cost and life of a CFL makes them a less efficient choice.

Nice thing about those CFL's....they use an Edison base. So, the odds are real good that when a better light comes along, it will be offered with an Edison base.

are you saying that the life rating for HID bulbs are false? A typical HID MH can last anywhere from 10,000-30,000hrs where CFL are about half of HID; the one he has rated for 8,000 hrs.

HID is an old technology and a very reliable technology use in commercial evironment w/ tall and open ceiling. It's easier to install 4 HID than it is to 12 CFL fixtures; same as maintenance.

Garage lighting, I don't see the point in using anything other than good old 48" fluorescent. Standard T8 bulbs are more efficient than most consumer LED's and they even cost less.

They are probably only more efficient when you use the mirror backed t8 fixtures, otherwise the back of the fixtures absorbs a lot of the lumens.

I'm using some fluorescent 48-inchers in the shop, but only in a specific area... Reason being, I just don't like the way traditional 48" lights look... I wanted more of a vintage look...

All that said, I've been using these lights for a week now. The output is REALLY impressive. I've got plenty of light and then some. Is it the most efficient way to light my building? No way. But given my requirements (both aesthetic and budget), I'm really happy.

ya, this is really cool.....made in Canada, does not ship to Canada. Having lived in the US for years (as a Canadian) and now back in North Vancouver it makes me insane! like WTF

You're 1/2 right. For typical garage lighting, that is just used to store cars, it's hard to beat good old fluorescents, cuz they're cheap.

But they're not more efficient than LED anymore.
