Affordable Ratchet Wrenches?

Hey guys. Looking to buy my younger brother a set of ratcheting wrenches from 8-19mm, no size skips. I don't want to spend a ton of money on them as he doesn't work on things often enough or professionally, but i don't want to get him HF quality (i know this is OK for some, but i would like to spend a bit more than that). I found a GW set for $52, but i don't know if there are better deals or even a metric and SAE set. I don't know the companies or quality of anything other than GW as i haven't used anything else. Help!

For the price take a look at Tekton, EZ-RED and Napa Carlyle I think each one of these companies offer full sets and I believe quality is comparable between all these. But GW is usually a good option.

Get the DeWalt at sears outlet, they go as low as $35 shipped, but usually $40/50. People rate them pretty highly from what I've seen and their measured fitments are good for clearance.

Why not harbor freight? for an occasional user it would be perfect I use a lot of their stuff yet to break a socket. And I have abused them. More than the limited amount of snap on that I have that I would not beat the **** out of.

Gotta just recommend going with the Gearwrench as you have already found and others have mentioned too. Only good reason not to would be if you were looking to spend a lot more money.

I've become a huge fan of Tekton tools. They may not have the largest sockets you'll ever find but they sell sets that are a complete range of sizes and also have great impact sockets, and wrench sets. I've been working on a project Blazer and their prices have been right on point for allowing me to buy a few different tool sets every couple of weeks in order to ensure I have what I need to get the job done. In fact before too long I'm probably going to be grabbing a few new sets of their standard and metric deep well sockets because my craftsman set just happens to be missing a few of the sizes I need. They have some really nice long ratcheting combo wrenches that I'm itching to get my hands on as well!!1

Tekton sets are $75, I don't consider that very inexpensive. Maybe its just me? granted to get the full size range, but you are getting up there in price. :dunno:

They skip sizes.....I'd get the DeWalt like previously mentioned. They have a modified open end and are the best bang for the buck

Get the dewalts
For reference, the HF wrenches are basically identical to the channellock in this pic. I have the channellock in sae, pittsburg in metric..

I think I'm more impressed with Tektons array of regular and impact sockets more than the ratcheting wrenches but I know when I've purcahsed Gear Wrench wrenches they always seem to be missing one crucial size or another and it's one of those things where I never can tell until I need it, and then I am left wondering if I lost a wrench or if it simply wasn't an included size. That's probably just an indicator I need better tool box management though.... More tool stuff to buy in the future, lol. They definitely are more affordable though.

The DeWalts are just as wide as the GW, it's an illusion. That said I still want them because I believe they might be Hi-Five made, and thus stronger.

Wait until Black Friday or Cyber Monday and buy a nice set of Gearwrench. They won't let him down and if one does, its quick and easy to warranty.

With the holidays coming up Sears will most likely have the gearwrench metric & sae set for about $50. They also have all kinds of rewards card deals so they should be less than that. It only goes to 18 but I added the 19.
Here's a pic. They're the ones in the blow molded case.9ba6060654caadb7c407e82177b3e12c.jpg

I suggest Carlyle available at napa. A little better I would see how much a craftsman industrial set is. I have old us made reversibles that are my favorite ratcheting mechanisms.

Definitely get reversible sets.

Get the DeWalts if you can find them cheap. No skips, well built, really nice. Like someone mentioned earlier, I think they are sourced from Hi-Five. I purchased multiple sets last year when Sears had them for $29 dollars!
