If you believe the internet, every V8 GM has built in the last 20 years has blown up from AFM/DFM. I have put well over 100,000 miles on 2 of them and have 70,000 on my third, all without any issues. Don't let the horror stories scare you, they are actually pretty good engines.
When you have something like 15+million of them out there in the market, even a 0.1% failure rate (1/1000) leads to a lot of complaints. Statistically the motors still are pretty reliable.

I have a 2017 Silverado with 106000 miles and plugged the AFM in the obd port as I drove off the lot. Only 1 issue with truck, I just installed a new condenser last week. Been a reliable truck.

On my sons 2014 I bought him the "boost" brand. 130,000 so far and no issues. We installed the disabler at around 75,000 miles. In contrast we have 6-1500 Silverado's at work and they won't install the device. Out of the 6 trucks, we have replaced cam and lifters in 5 of them.....
Best $250 ever spent IMO

What most people dont realize is the actual camshaft for the AFM engines is different. The lobes on the AFM cylinders are different. Yes they do make things to bypass the electronics but it really does not do it correctly.

If you want to spend money on something spend it on more frequent oil changes with the correct oil and you probably wont have an issue.
2017 Silverado 5.3. 106K miles. Chevrolet changed oil every 5K miles with Dexos. Bam, collapsed lifter, bent pushrod, broken rocker arm at startup on a cold engine. $3,700 later, back running. Now has 170K with a range device.

That's a shame that supposedly tier 1 vehicle manufacturers don't care and push insufficiently validated contraptions to mass production.

Threads like this makes me think that Lada, Trabant and Yugo weren't that bad after all.

Ever restrictive fuel economy requirements is a difficult mountain to conquer. Usually it comes at a cost that nobody wants to bear when needing repair. The GM ADM is to try and make these bloated 1/2 ton grocery getters have a semblance of fuel economy. The cost of repairing this system isn't part of the fuel economy requirements and as a bonus it makes the dealerships more money when they fail. How about making a smaller lighter 1/2 ton truck that gets better fuel economy and doesn't need all this ADM and stop/start systems that can easily fail? Oh yeah, that would make sense.

the funny thing about that is trucks maybe make like 2-3mpg better than the non-AFM old ones.

That plug in AFM disabler doesnt do anything to actually stop the issue of what grenades inside the engine due to the AFM system.

The 2014+ chevy half tons should be worrying about the horrendous transmissions more than dropping a lifter.

Two to three MPG savings is huge in the world of the EPA and CAFE.
Regarding my sons Silverado, he does little extended highway driving where the 8/6/4 could "possibly" help with mileage. His MPG actually went up slightly ~ 1-2 mpg after disabling it. And he checks his MPG religiously and drives the speed limit everywhere. One-size fits all rarely fits all.....
