pretty sad that you get a laugh out of someone elses misfortune.
Dealer worked on my 96 Aurora with the OEM Delco thats under the rear seat.
Tech somehow pulled the vent house out of the pass thru hole in the floor.
I noticed a spot in the garage floor one day that had an acid etch and rust stain.
It was already too late,the acid had traveled about 2 ft in the subframe.
Of course dealer denied all this and the repair was on me. Delco battery came out and a AGM went in.That was 2000.
My dads Cirrus was 3 yrs old and battery crapped out. Sams put in a new one which lasted about 6 months before it started leaking. The battery on these is over part of the suspension,need to remove the front wheel to access.
Same scenario acid ate into the suspension. Sams paid for all the damage as well as refunded the battery price.
I replaced it with an AGM and never looked back.
I have several more personal accounts of acid damage,but I think thats enough amusement for you for one night.

It is such a rare occurrence for a new battery to be defective and leak that know there is an abuse issue somewhere.

No one said that any battery was damaged....
the vent hose was pulled out of the body pass thru grommet.
The Cirrus battery was defective. Time to move on Im done trying to justify why people use AGM in vehicles,when according to you they arent needed.

You should go back and read my posts.
AGM' s are the correct choice in some applications. But not all and most certainly not in a typical automotive application.
But I agree this conversation with you is point less and it is time to move on.

Back 20 years ago, General Motors had an issue with the positive terminals coming out of the battery and leaking acid all over.

Also at that time they had lots of new batteries that were defective. I saw quite a few brand new vehicles come in on a tow truck due to defective brand new batteries.

Two or three times I have also seen dual battery setup have one battery that literally blew the top off the battery

I also recently saw a battery about a year old that shorted internally. It pulled in and was so hot that it was smoking

They only time I would select an AGM over lead acid is due to concern over fumes. If you have questions whether or not lead acid is a competent battery, golf carts world wide still use lead acid and work just fine. They are abused daily and charged over and over and over and over and over again. They are a lot less $$ then AGM.

With that being said I do have (3) 105 ah 12V Duracell AGM's in our camper. Only reason I went with AGM is they are in the living area. I comfirmed with Deka CS that they are safe to use AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT COMPLETELY SEALED in a box.

This is my current thought as well. I have a car where I'm going to trunk-mount the battery, and I'll use an AGM for that. As for the drivers with batteries under the hood, I'll stick with the conventional batteries.

Lead acid are indeed good batteries. Have you priced a Trojan golf cart battery? They are very heavy duty, high amp/hr, and weigh a ton. But lead acid is good technology and generally cheaper than equivalent AGM.

Nonetheless, AGM has other use cases besides just (no) fumes. They withstand vibration well (off road vehicles), and can be mounted in any position, such as laying on their side.
