Do I need one? I'm plumbing my air lines this weekend. I'm going to have an outlet near the compressor to use air tools on my work bench and then run a copper line over to the door for a reel. I got a combo regulator and separator. From what I understand the separation needs to be a good distance away to work properly. If I put it near the reel, the tools close by wont be treated so it needs to be close to the compressor. If I have to I can make some vertical loops with copper but want to skip it if I really dont need it. I'm dont do a whole lot with my compressor. Occasional air tool use. a quick painting project every once in a while but no automotive painting or anything. just minor stuff.

For the usage you anticipate, it wouldn’t be needed. The separator/ filter will likely serve your purposes. You could always add something later if your usage increases to daily or high volume use.

The more I think about it the more I think I dont need it. I dont blast. Some few and far between paint projects (I could always use a desiccant drier at the tool itself). I think I'll just come out with a flex hose in to the regulator/separator, plumb a drop right out of it with a drip leg, then up and over to the door where I'll mount my reel and have another drip leg. All 1/2 copper. Does this sound sufficient for my use?

Yes it does for your described use.
You can always add a cooler if needed later

I use a rapid air system, I ran it down the wall 24 feet away from my 80 gallon into my water and oil separators into a manifold.. one of the manifold outlets then pipes the dry air back down near the compressor to another manifold with outlets to my sandblaster and 2 couplers... $70 bucks plus cost of the water separators I have really dry air at both ends of my shop and it only took an hour or two.
